PostRe: PS5 - coming 2020 | AMD Zen 2 CPU | AMD Navi 8K Ray-Tracing GPU | SSD | PSVR | physical media | PS4 BC/cross play

Usb could work for me too, although I would prefer everything in one box. I am currently using an external drive on top of my 2tb internal hdd. I will be redownloading all ps4 games on to my ps5 and will need another 4tb at least. First world problems i know. Main thing is that the console is silent, because my pro is so loud on some games.

If they do that then I assume to get the speed advantage of the SSD you'll have to move any game you intend to play to it otherwise it'll be played from the slower HDD? Seems like a bit of a hassle.

Am I making this up, or did Sony confirm a while ago that PSVR would work on PS5?

Cerny did say in the first PS5 Wired interview that the current PSVR would be compatible with the new console.

One of the words Cerny uses to describe the audio may be a familiar to those who follow virtual reality: presence, that feeling of existing inside a simulated environment. When he mentions it, I ask him about PlayStation VR, the peripheral system that has sold more than 4 million units since its 2016 release. Specifically, I ask if there will be a next-gen PSVR to go alongside this next console. “I won't go into the details of our VR strategy today,” he says, “beyond saying that VR is very important to us and that the current PSVR headset is compatible with the new console.”

There are also rumours about a PSVR2.

Consumer 500GB SSDs are currently going for as little as £50. Of course, if you are buying them as component hardware in bulk then it would probably be a good deal cheaper than that. It would not be all that expensive to have one integrated with the hardware.

SSD prices are still falling though, in a year or so 1TB SSDs may be considerably cheaper. I can see it making sense to design the basic PS5 with a 1TB SSD and just to swallow the cost with the expectation that future units produced will be significantly less expensive to make.

I hope it’s a bit more than 256gb SDD hard drive.

Red Dead Redemption 2 takes up HALF of that, for Christ’s sake, after installation and updates!

I would prefer a larger capacity of HDD over slightly faster loading times, as I’ve gone digital for most of the PS4 games the last few years!

Cheers SoK

Agree re capacity. 1TB min, pref 4TB due to increasing install sizes but no idea what SSD prices are for those sizes

My guess is that we'll get a diddy SSD and a daddy HDD, with the more performance intensive games needing to be transferred to the SSD for playing. I hope I'm wrong.

That photo of the dev kit is making me reconsider what I hope the final console looks like  The flash on the camera makes the materials look like cheap wood and plastic.

If they want to scrimp on the SSD then I could see some form of hybrid storage solution going on where data that is needed now/soon is cached on the SSD whilst the majority stays on the larger HDD and swapped around as necessary.

I'd love a wooden console. Polished like the interior of an 80s Daimler. :datass:

I agree. I wooden console would be amazing.
We could have special editions with all sorts of varnishes, amazing different types of wood and even engraving.

Splendid.

Wood isn't especially efficient at transferring heat out of the unit so I don't think that would be a goer unfortunately.

An engraved case would be awesome though!

It's a necessary measure, what if Microsoft gazump Sony and decide that Project Scarlett's final name is PS6? Then when Sony launches the PS5 it will look like it's a whole generation behind and current PlayStation owners will be tricked into 'upgrading' to the Microsoft PS6...

Lots of hints to different games in that tweet (Resistance, Syphon Filter, Metal Gear Solid)

Are they hinting that they are working on 2 projects?

In their original mention of the game in the interview, they said it was a "reimagining". After a bit of thinking I decided it was a more third-person-y remake of Ico. Hopefully with graphics that aren't as washed out.
