According to a new report from “HipHopGamer“, Sony is working on a Remastering Engine for the new PlayStation, which will allow PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 titles to all run on the console with enhancements.

The feature will apparently work similarly to how the Xbox One X handles backwards compatibility, in that the PS5 won't just run these older games, but add improvements like 4K support.

Sony has filed patents in the past that have seemingly suggested the PS5 will support backwards compatibility with every previous PlayStation console. Further, it even patented a system to add trophies to PS1 and PS2 games. In other words, it's clearly been investing in backwards compatibility technology, but for now, it remains unclear how this will manifest with the PS5.

Getting the whole lot working would be one thing, to then touch them up (especially PS1 which looks properly diabolical on a big 4K screen) would be phenomenal.

I’m not getting my hopes up.

Wish I'd known that before spending money on a PS4 this past Christmas. :|

I don't think they even bothered with that. Just found the font they used for the PS3 slim and PS4, pressed backspace on the number, and typed "5". Job done, let's have an extended lunch.

EDIT: With nothing but Microsoft Paint, I have saved Sony the effort for the next couple of console generations:

(And before anyone whines, yes, Microsoft are just as bad for it lately)

Well aren't you a genius. I should just give up working for money since it's that easy.

State of that 7. :dread:

Is that really the same font? The design doesn't match at all!

If all you do is rehash your past work, then sure, you should give up doing it.

Is pointing out one piece of lazy design the same as saying all designers do nothing for their money?

How do you know it's lazy? For all you know the team went through weeks of concepts and iterations before someone decided to stick with the safe one for consistency. Just because you don't see how someone arrived there doesn't make it 'easy'.

It's a free one I found online. I doubt Sony would make the original publicly available.

I wonder if Sony looked at the reaction to the Series X and decided to go for a more radical version of the final design?
I'm sure they have multiple concepts they are considering.

OK, lazy was the wrong word and I apologise.

Allow me to rephrase:

Is pointing out one piece of unadventurous design the same as saying all designers do nothing for their money? Because that's the way you interpreted it. It's precisely the sort of thing you would rip the piss out of normally, except in this instance there's some overlap with what you do for a living so you've turned into Captain MegaSalt.

Sorry, I hate to use the term, but I was 'triggered'. I've had a load of this gooseberry fool from various people (As in I'VE GOT PHOTOSHOP HOW HARD CAN IT BE) recently so it set me off. I even gave a talk on design before the break to a large and wide group before Christmas, part of which was explaining the background work that goes in to this stuff, and one of the people that was in that talk STILL said the same thing today (and also wants me to start putting upside down pages I'm manuals rather than just set the printer to the correct leading edge.)

Just take it in a way that means you make it look easy. Then it turns into a compliment.

Oh yeah sure "background work". I'm sure there's plenty of doodling involved and making sure your pencil are sharpened but it's not as hard as doing a real job like sitting in meetings or sending emails is it!?
