They announced the June event 6 days before it (Friday at 4pm) so maybe an announcement tonight for a 6th August show. We shall see.

Yeah I should look into cheaper options really, it's just pissing me off so much now that I want a quick solution!

There's load of Chinese ones on eBay. Some of those are <£20, even.

I think I've gone through about 5 of them. Quality of the triggers really has been cheap af. Not tried the newer model (one with the light shining through the touch pad) but it wouldn't surprise me if they too were shite.

No way will PS4 controllers work on ps5. I've got a beautiful limited edition ps3 controller that doesn't work on the PS4. I've tried to sell it but nobody is interested.

Rapidly-greying is Mediocre to Average at games :fp:

Sony just seem so backwards on some of these things now, not only compared to Microsoft but also when you look at how they used to be in the past.

Coming from PS1 to PS2 (the last time I did a PlayStation generation transition!) you could bring forward all of your games, all of your controllers and even your old memory cards. Yes you needed the new PS2 controller for certain games that relied on the new analog buttons but that wasn't a huge deal. There's no reason why they couldn't support old controllers in situations where any new features specific to the PS5 are not required

There will probably be a third party adaptor that makes them compatible, just for added insanity!

PS2 controller was essentially the PS1 Dual Shock controller though. Do you hold back progress for the sake of backwards compatibility? PS3 added in the six axis, PS4 added in the touch pad, light bar and share button, PS5 is addding in adaptive triggers, microphone etc. It makes it much more difficult to support old controllers when the features are different and would likely reduce the uptake of these new features with developers. Is there really any point in PS4 controller support for PS5 games if half of the PS5 games use the new controller features? I certainly get it though. It's nice at least that PS3 supports PS4 contollers, and there's no reason why that support shouldn't be replicated on PS4 with PS5 contollers.

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.

Well the PS2 added full button analog control and yet still allowed backwards compatibility. I don't think supporting old controllers comes at the expense of progress, this is a situation where having both things is a win win!

Good point! It's hard to really debate the pros and cons without having actually used a PS5 controller. If the level of immersion truely is that much higher, then I can see why Sony would want everyone to use a proper PS5 controller. If it's the same sort of level of upgrade as the PS2 buttons (a feature so subtle that I don't even know if it's still present on PS4 or not), then perhaps I'd rather save myself £50 on that second controller at the cost of less games using these new features. Sadly most of the changes in previous generations have turned out to be a bit naff. I can't think of any game I have which uses the touchpad for example. Hopefully this controller truely is a revolution.

Absolutely if they do some amazing things with the controller then that will be great and I'm all for games exploiting that as much as possible, but if I'm playing backward compatible games or just something that doesn't use the new features it would be nice to be able to just use an old PS4 pad!

Sony really should make PS4 controllers work for PS4 games (or earlier).

I always thought it was pretty outrageous Sony got away with selling another multitap on PS2, especially when it was unnecessary on N64, Dreamcast, Xbox and Gamecube! About the only defence of it from a cost perspective was that you also had to buy a comparatively priced DVD remote on Xbox.

Dualshock 4 went back to digital face buttons unfortunately, they were almost completely overlooked though.

I don't think many PS5 games will use new functionality that would stop the use of a DS4, considering (like you say) how much past new features have been used.

Anything multi-platform certainly won't

Sony are taking DS4 compatibility in a totally unexpected direction:

I did not see that dog AT ALL the first time that played through (until the very end obviously).

Which existing PS4 peripherals/accessories will work on PS5?

  • Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.
  • The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5).
  • The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.
  • Both the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5.

officially licensed racing wheels

They pulled this gooseberry fool last gen. Only the GT branded and ps branded fanatec ps3 wheels worked, even though there was no technical reason why the others couldn't apart from just not being white listed.

Well that lets me know that if I do get a new Dual Shock 4 to replace the fragile piece of gooseberry fool that came with my Pro that it will at least be useful for backwards compatibility going forwards.

Build quality of the new controller had better have seen some improvements over this generation though, my current pad started suffering from stick drift within the first strawberry floating month of having it! :x

I remember the L2 trigger on the pad from my launch console broke the day after Bloodborne came out which was strawberry floating great timing.
