I can't see how this is going to be so cheap if they are having to throw away around 50% of the SOC's that they are manufacturing, that's a lot of wasted money. I guess we will find out tomorrow!!

Yeh and the controller is quite costly too. If they've cut the number of units being made they also don't get the discount for the numbers they originally increased the manufacturing run by (which was one of the reasons people had thought the increased production run was for when it was announced)

If they're manufacturing less units now over the period to get the yield numbers in a better place, they probably don't need to match the Xbox price, they can sell it for whatever, get the fans to buy at the launch price and then match the Xbox price when they have bigger quantities being made. There's not much business sense sell a product at a loss when you can't fill customer demand.

I'll be the first to admit I know very little about hardware manufacturing but, naively, I would have thought that Sony would only really care about "delivered SOCs" and any that had to be thrown away would be written off by the manufacturer. If I ordered a cake, then I wouldn't expect to pay for any failed attempts the bakery had along the way.

So hopefully it doesn't impact the price, but will likely impact the availability.

Well it's all rumour right now. 50% does sound excessively high especially as they increased volume of the first run only a few months ago, so I can't believe they would have done that without being confident of the initial prototypes coming through. It's probably BS to generate headline clicks/Sony putting out false info to surprise with a price.

Update 09/15/20 at 2:45 p.m.: Sony Interactive Entertainment has denied reports that it has cut Playstation 5 production by four million units.

“While we do not release details related to manufacturing, the information provided by Bloomberg is false,” a statement to GamesIndustry.biz reads. “We have not changed the production number for PlayStation 5 since the start of mass production.”

Didn’t know the controller was proving costly as well, I’m thinking £450 is the absolute minimum they’ll be selling the disc version for then, sounds more like a £400/£500 split to me.
