That’s right. But the vagueness left many to speculate there would be more to it, but there wasn’t!

Ahh right, I see what you mean, I’ve just expected it to play PS4 games as if I were playing them on the PS4 Pro unless a dev releases a specific next gen patch.

Speaking of, is it just Ghost of Tsushima that’s confirmed to be getting a next gen patch (out of the first party releases)

Well, at least they acknowledge it, there may be hope for me yet. Fingers crossed and thanks to those that have pointed out availability to me thus far, that I've missed every time. :fp:

What are the odds that they find some PS5’s down the back of the sofa for, shall we say, 8am on Tuesday...

Upgrade may be offered at no additional cost or for a fee and may be available for a limited time. If players have a PS4™ game on Blu-ray™ Disc, they will need to insert the PS4 game disc to see the upgrade path, download the PS5 version and keep the PS4™ game disc inserted each time they play the PS5™ version of the game. To upgrade eligible PS4 disc titles to digital PS5 versions, players need a PS5™ console with a disc drive.

Probably all a load of bollocks. Read on at your own risk.

There's a supposed deleted Keighley tweet about PS5 news dropping tomorrow. He thinks people will like it. And another rumour (which, predictably, some people think may be connected to the deleted tweet) about... BC :slol: This one says that, if you stick older gen games into the PS5 it'll cause Jim Ryan to appear on screen saying "Who'd want to play that old shite?!" and then proceeds to spit the disc out it'll play them via PS Now. That Dusk Golem guy (he of the Capcom/Resi8 PS5 rumour) has since said he'd heard BC would work on PS5 in a "weird way".

You were warned!

If Keighley did tweet that then it's likely true because he's normally kept informed by the big three. It also ties in with the rumour from a couple of weeks ago. But with Sony I wonder if they would monetise the solution.

Would the content still be streaming off the discs, then? Because if they run via PS Now which requires a subscription, and the games are on Sony's servers, why would you then need to put a disc in to 'unlock' it? It'd be there on the service for everyone, no? And wouldn't they also run into all sorts of licensing issues? They'd effectively be re-releasing old games.

PS1, 2 and PS3 games are already available to stream on PS Now but the selection is very limited.

Maybe there are multiple ways to access the content. If you don't have old gen games laying about, you sub to the new PS Now. But if you do have old gen games, then you don't need a sub to play those ones, and sticking the disc in PS5 allows you to download the updated version? (The disc acting like a sort of key or something) I have no idea

Right. This is the other thing. "Updated PSNow" needs to mean "vastly improved library". (Along with improved filtering or whatever to make them look sharper.) Because what's on there now is a bloody embarrassment.

Dropping that news and a bunch more PS5s to preorder on Monday would sure put a spoke in Microsoft's plans.

I remember reading somewhere that PS1 emulation, heck an entire PS1, would be so cheap to put inside a PS4 it would cost Sony more to license the CD-ROM. So with that in mind, the thought Sony would go through the entire rigmarole of streaming PS1 games (which I'm guessing would mean putting the lot on servers?) for BC doesn't make much sense. PS3 we know isn't really possible so PS Now would be the only realistic solution, but for PS1 and 2 there's better options if they cared enough to do it.

An expanded PS Now featuring more of the PS1, 2 and 3 back catalogue I could understand though, but they're still going to run into the same licensing issues that has unfortunately stopped so much from ever seeing the light of day. If Microsoft can't give us Project Gotham Racing 1, 2 or 3 on Xbox for example, when I'm sure that would have been right at the top of their to-do list, I have NO FAITH in Sony bothering with Jim 'who'd ever wanna play this arthritic gooseberry fool when Gran Turismo 7 is coming' Ryan at the helm.

I'm not sure many people care that much about BC prior to PS4?
I think all release consoles from both manufacturers will sell out in the short term.

Sony has claimed based on their own internal data that the portion of their audience who cares about backwards compatibility (beyond presumably PS4) is tiny. Whether that is true or not, I dunno. Nintendo seem to do very well constantly re-releasing their old stuff. Maybe a better barometer would be how many people have made use of the BC on Xbox 360 and Xbox One. If that's miniscule too then maybe it is niche.

People interested in remakes and remasters of older games is clearly massive however, as evidenced by the stream of hits Activision alone has had these past few years.

Yeah, it's not in Keighley's m.o. to be letting the cat out the bag in so specific a manner like that, so I'm inclined to believe it is fake.

Ignoring the fact it's Crash Bandicoot :dread: , those are select games – Sony also clearly believe a market is there for remakes and remasters for select, loved titles given how many it has made over the years.

I would have liked PS3 BC so I could play the old Ratchet and Clank games before the new one hits but I still have my old PS3 so it’s no biggy.

What’re is the cheapest place at the moment to pick up a second PS5 controller?
