Astrobot is a tech demo and should have been free on release. Change my mind.

Have Sony added in the functionality of being able to store PS5 games on an external HDD and then moving them back onto the internal to play them like Microsoft have with the Series X/S? Not got a PS5 but someone I know was asking so thought I’d ask in here.

The delight of the gun designs and references never lets up. I've taken lots of screenshots even of the gun descriptions because some are so good or so funny :)

Have I missed something? These games are free and The Witness alone is a gift and a treat?

A new patent has surfaced where PlayStation Trophies will be awarded for older games running on emulation software. Now, unless Sony suddenly changes tack and allows people to play PlayStation games via emulation, this is somehow tied to backwards compatibility.

The filing (which was applied on November 30, 2020 and was published last week) over on Patentscope states the following:

A computer-implemented method assigns one or more trophies to a user. A game is emulated in response to a request from a client device. A trophy trigger is detected during emulation of the game by comparing a memory value of the emulated game to a predetermined value and assigning the one or more trophies to the user based on the detected trophy trigger

The patent goes on to describe this as method of implementing trophies into previously released games that have no trophies, without actually modifying the software itself. For example, PS2 games previously released on PS4 that have trophies are essentially native console ports for the system, thus the reason they still work on PS5.

However, some older PS2 titles, say from the PS3, are still the original versions that released on PS2. Because of this, they lack trophy support of any kind and adding them would require the game to be modified, thus creating a “native” port for the newer console. This patent seems to be looking into a way around that, adding these trophies via network or software emulation, thus keeping the original game code intact.

PlayStation Now seems like the most likely implementation of classic titles.

I don't mind purchasing older titles again specifically if they've had work done (currently playing Rez for example as part of Sony's free give-away and I can't for the life of me think why you'd ever want to now play the Dreamcast or PS2 versions ever again), but most of the time these old titles just aren't up to scratch, with emulation used as a way to get you to buy a game you already own because the disc doesn't work on the current system. Take something like Jak and Daxter - the one currently available to purchase on PS4/5 is worse than the PS3 and PS2 versions. And if you purchased the PS2 and 3 copies of the game, that doesn't then work on the PS4 or 5. It's a complete fudge compared to Microsoft.

So I've added the new games to my library. Of those, I only had The Witness already and I don't have VR (but no harm in adding them in case I get it in future). Which game should I try first?

Rez! Because you're either going to think it's absolutely brilliant or a load of arse, in which you just move a cursor around while holding down X.

I did play and enjoy Rez on the PS2, so that's a good shout.

Subnautica is *easily* the best game of the non-VR bunch. It looks like just another survival game but it’s actually a story-based exploration mystery (and a great one at that). It looks wonderful, the soundtrack is brilliant, and it can be genuinely terrifying if you have any sort of dread of the unknown depths. To say more would spoil it, but trust me, you won’t regret it. Install it on your internal storage instead of an external drive to smooth out the loading and pop-in (it’s only 12GB).

Also, pro tip, if you tap L1, R1 and X all at the same time in game it opens the dev console where you can change the frame rate from the default 30fps by typing “targetframerate 60” or “targetframerate 120” if you have a display that supports it. PS5 can handle either target easy peasy.

You can also toggle vsync on/off by typing “vsync”.

Thanks for that Jiggles. I'd dismissed that particular game but now I'll likely give it a go.

Yeah, even though I knew the guy who wrote it wrote some of my favourite stories in games (The Talos Principle & The Swapper), I too had just assumed from looking at the thing that it was just underwater Minecraft.

The first hour or *is* heavy on the survival-crafting (because you have literally just crash landed on the planet and have to scavenge to repair your lifeboat), but once you have your radio back, the story begins. There still is scavenging and crafting, but compared to the likes of Minecraft, it’s very light (most recipes need only one or two of a resource). Thirst and hunger are there in Survival if you really want that style of gameplay, but I just play in Freedom, where they’re disabled.

Also, quick addendum about higher frame rates: There will be some actions that are jittery if you go higher than the default (like walking around your lifeboat or later on when you discover [something]) but because the overwhelming majority of the game is swimming about, where it’s smooth as butter, it’s worth the small sacrifice.

Yeah, they will be including a DLC of Below Zero at same time. Hopefully by that time I'll play on it with 4k/60fps.

Have they confirmed the first game is definitely getting a PS5 version? Below Zero is the standalone sequel, not DLC, so I wouldn’t take its upcoming release as confirmation that the first game is getting upgraded.

I also don’t think the dev commands disable trophies. I had one pop for me yesterday after spawning a vehicle with it

I still own a lot of PS3 games, I wish Sony would sort backwards compatibility out so I could use them on the PS5. Even if I had to play them via PSNow but having the disc in the drive let me play it without being charged more for it.

But this PSU article is literally the only one around that claims it’s coming, it references a press release that they don’t actually show, they updated the article confirming Below Zero’s May release but say there’s still no word on Subnautica PS5 (they write PS4 here but that’s obviously a typo), Unknown Worlds themselves don’t acknowledge a PS5 version of the first game anywhere on their socials, site, or their very public Trello boards in which they track their development and roadmap of the first game. And they didn’t even do the PS4/XB1 ports of the first game themselves, but brought the maintenance of them back in-house recently, so it’s extremely likely they have an external studio working on porting it to the new platforms. And they certainly won’t be porting it themselves if they’re busy with the sequel.
