Doom is twenty today!

Returning to older games usually means donning shades and thinking how 'modern' games play so much better... but not with Doom. It's still *so* slick and fun to play.

Unfortunately I didn't have a PC at the time Doom was released but I've since tried it out on systems such as the 32X, SNES, N64, PlayStation, Gameboy Advance, Xbox, Xbox 360 and PS3. The PlayStation version is ace (that soundtrack!)... the N64 version is uniquely different (really dark, really spooky!)... the SNES version is terrible... the 32X version surprisingly decent... and the 360 version is probably most like the PC original.

Gonna pour a drink, fire up the PSX and cheer Doom as it hits twenty. Legendary.

Eurogamer joins the party. Polygon presses fire. RPS opens the gate.

Didn't the 32X version have worse music than the SNES, or am I thinking of the Jaguar.

Edit: Yeah it's the 32X version that had the gash music, oh god.

Hoping Steam will have a 75% doom sale or something.

AVGN is legendary for detesting the 32X... music aside, no sane person would say the SNES version is better than the 32X version - bar the music :D . The PlayStation version is awesome; the music is completely different to the PC version but maybe better... it's more atmosphere than actual music but it's brilliantly scary.

Didn't play Doom until the XBLA version but I really dig it, particularly love how arcadey and fast paced it is. It's insane how strong the gunplay is all these years later.

Haven't played them myself but the PS1/N64 versions seem really interesting, the 'Happy Video Game Nerd' did excellent reviews of them:

The 32X version was my first doom and I played it soooo much. Only when I played it on my pc years later did I realise it was unfinished and my poor parents had effectively shelled out £70 for the first shareware episode :dread: I've still got my 32x copy!

Bought doom on xbla about 6 months ago and it's STILL brilliant

My ultimate (hah) doom memory's come from playing link up on the PSone when it first came out... Hundreds of hours at my mates house, tvs back to back playing death match

only Doom I've played is the GBA port, was pretty good considering the limitations of putting doom a screen that small.

Lots of good memories being shared here :-). Yeah, the 32X version was decent - some levels were indeed missing, but it was probably the best available non-PC version at the time. Also, I agree - the GBA version(s) were really cool if a tad pixelly!

Unbelievably, I've never played Doom online (or local link)... a travesty when the game was built around that! I'm surprised that none of the GRcade PC crew have commented yet... maybe I'm showing my age. I've read stories of folk who were seriously into multiplayer Doom... *really* into it. Some fans still design additional levels for the game today - through the infamous ".wad" files, I believe. The DoomWorld website is a great Doom resource and contains some neat historical info too.

I'm more of a casual console player but, even so, I have a huge respect for the game.

Good to hear from someone who was in the pits of hell from the start! It is one of those games that hasn't really gotten old. I was still an Amiga guy back in '93, so I played Gloom instead... extremely pixel-fied but pretty cool at the time! It all changed in late '95 when the PSX version of Doom launched - good times.

First played it back in 1994/5 on my very first multimedia PC, one of those windows 3.1 Time machines. It had Doom pre-installed under the DOS prompt, not sure if it was a full version, maybe a demo/shareware version but I loved it. I can still hear those awful "arghs" of wrath from the mutants in that facility. Used to always make me panic

Yep, it was the first game I recall ever playing. We had it setup on the PC in the living room and my mum used to play it, when she was done I just took over.

I used to play the original counter strike online with the username IDDQD as well :slol: :fp:

I used to love playing the warehouse level with the chainsaw

First 'saw' Doom running on PC, then finally got to play it on the Jaguar. Granted the Jaguar version was far from the best, but it gave me a taste of this seminal game and I loved every minute of it.

Doom was the first game I bought for my Playstation. The creepy music and ambient sound found in the PS version was excellent.

An awesome game, one that I occasionally fire up from time to time. It hasn't lost any of its charm and playability.

I first heard of it when I was 10/11. I'd had my PC for about a year and was MASSIVELY into Wolfenstein 3D. Then one of the guys in school was talking about this game that had just been released that was better than Wolfenstein. I told him to piss off as Wolfenstein was god-tier and nothing could touch it.

I found out less than a week later just how wrong I was.

It's still strawberry floating amazing fun and easily better than a lot of the FPS games coming out now. It's aged so beautifully.

Doom.

Had it on a 486 back in the day. It was shareware at the time and I was amazed by this 3d demo. I thought it was just the opening room until i accidentally pressed SPACE by the door and it opened.
Holy strawberry float!!! :slol:

Not sure it was shareware. Remember someone brought a demo into the office and it only contained the first level or so. However, demo + office of networked PCs = first online FPS fun! You could only have 4 players, but amazing.

It's great to hear these stories, especially from people who played Doom in the 90s. Without Googling it to check, I believe that Doom on PC was indeed released as Shareware initially - I think you got a few levels for free and then paid to own the full game. I enjoy that folk remember how much the soundtrack and effects add to the game... that PSX soundtrack is scarier than I remembered, and the shotgun sound seems more atmospheric than most gun games made since then.

I feel that a big part of Doom's success is the quality of the maps. There's so many different paths and rooms and it is great to explore them and discover switches and hidden secrets. Ths still feels good when played today; Doom's design from levels through graphics, sound and controls is just so slick. I'd only scraped the surface on previous plays but it's time to get back into it.
