Yeah it's the original Doom and Doom II that are causing the problem!

Fwiw I'm really enjoying the first game on the switch. It's not perfect, but it's doom.

It's funny.. the PS4 version of Duke Nukem 3D felt lightning fast compared to older versions. Shame this hasn't done so :(

How is Doom 3? Wasn’t it more of a horror survivally type game?

Haven't noticed any performance issues myself, at least nothing that has affected my enjoyment of the game, my only frustration is not being able to play offline which rather defeats the point of getting it on Switch.

The performance and visual issues are probably not all that noticeable unless you play a lot of Doom anyway.

It's not necessarily that these ports are "bad" as such, they're pretty serviceable and do only cost a few quid, it's just that they could (and definitely should) have been much better given how much source ports have refined things over the years.

Yes. As for the port, going by DF Retro, it's the best of the 3.

Doom 3 is a bit more horror survival, although this port is based on the BFG version which reduces that aspect somewhat. The flashlight change and plentiful ammo and health in comparison to the vanilla game does reduce the tension quite a bit.

Grabbed Doom 1 on Switch as I loved Doom and wanted to play it on handheld again -- I loved it on Game Boy Advance, but as fantastic port it was it was missing some of key levels which annoyed me. So I'm glad I get full experience (... singleplayer, that is...) of Doom on go.

Still, not too trilled with having to be online just to connect, for a game with ZERO online multiplayer modes or leaderboards or anything that would need you to be online <_< Also I can't help but chuckle at the credits (one after original credits) clearly showing co-op play when there isn't one in this port! So yeah, outside of PC version Xbox 360 Xbox Live Arcade port is still best way to play these games due to online modes and even allows you to play them when offline.** (That, and Doom 2 360 has new levels.)

Still, I'm enjoying Doom a lot. Went through Episode 1 twice, and another one just to try out secret level. Now onto Episode 2 and it's starting to feel it's going to get more challenging (on Hurt Me Plenty difficulty), which is good thing as Episode 1 didn't really make me feel like I'm on my toes :eyes:

**though, I will at least say that Xbox 360 versions you can't use any cheats -- however in this port you are able to use them by going to Cheats menu, which is nice thing to have.

The switch one does have co-op split screen.

Oh. It's just under Multiplayer, then? Used to seeing it in its own option. Well then! 4-player?

Now release Final Doom on consoles.

Isn't Final Doom considered weakest Doom in the series? From all I know it's not ID's own work, but rather bunch of fans' levels made into one packaging and it didn't really work well or something along these lines according to wikis I've read.

Most of the additional stuff "Final Doom", "Master Levels for Doom II" etc. is fan work that was officially licensed and sold by ID. There were other fan packs that got a commercial release as well but without the ID branding.

Their fun and have some great levels and moments, but it's clear that they aren't ID levels.

Some of the authors for the levels in these packs went on to have proper careers in the games industry. Tim Willits who worked on Master Levels for Doom II went on to join ID and is director there now, various other people went on to join Valve etc.

Well Final Doom was effectively just a commercially released map pack two years after Doom II that added no new features to the game, and by which time the gaming industry was already moving on. So it was rightly criticised for that reason.

As for the levels themselves, TNT Evilution is a bit naff. It has some great levels but also a bunch of mediocre filler levels.
Plutonia is much better and also much more difficult. Some of the levels are a bit too much of a Doom II clone however.

Master Levels is a bunch of standalone levels of varying quality. It definitely shows that it is from the early Doom mapping scene. Black Tower was the only memorable level imo.

I am amazed by how fun Doom still is. It's tense, satisfying, wonderful! It has aged better than any other game I know of and that is testament to its design.

So, if I bought the Switch version, I can’t play it on the go, nor without a Nintendo online account? I only really play my Switch away from home without connecting to WiFi, and I don’t plan on having the paid online Nintendo account either

No will still work without having an internet connection assuming it's the same as Doom 3 which I've played at work with no internet connection.

Yeh, they fixed it. At launch you had to be online, now you can play offline.
