I'm really enjoying Part One btw. It's hard as nails but...it's more DOOM. Which is exactly what I want right now.

Any word on a next gen update? I gave my physical release to my Dad (no context) with the PS4 but I'd rebuy this digitally with all the DLC tomorrow if it was tarted up even more.

Holy gooseberry fool. The Blood Swamps are...christ whoever thought having a Buff Totem enhanced Marauder fight in a teeny tiny enclosed space with environmental hazards all around is a strawberry floating...wanker.

A massive ding dong.

I did that on (presumably) a much lower difficulty than you are and still had major problems

Yeah I'm on Ultra Violence aka the one before Nightmare. I cannot, cannot, imagine how impossible this gooseberry fool is on that hardest difficulty!

EDIT: Did it. strawberry float.

Are you playing on controller or KB+M? I found the Marauder considerably easier to deal with when playing with keyboard and mouse, when I switched to user a controller he became much more of a pain

KB+M.

At the final boss of Part One and I turned Sentinal Armour on. iD have never gotten the hang on bosses and this one is just as interminable as the rest.

I've really enjoyed it as a package though. I think it's probably about the right length, and although it's hard as strawberry floating nails it's also just as thrilling as the main game.

EDIT: Seems Part 2 is the same 3 level structure but holy gooseberry fool so far it's much better. The new hammer completely changes the combat flow and the new enemies are super interesting. Also, the plot has gone full batshit.

Welp, finished both DLCs.

Thoughts:

Part One was much, much harder. Holy gooseberry fool it was hard. I still haven't finished the Slayer gates as they absolutely murdered me. Part Two was...much easier and, for the most part, it hit the sweet spot for me. The new hammer made pretty much every encounter that much more manageable

The new enemies were all great...except the Poison Prowler. He only appears 4 times I think, but each time unless you kill him immediately it's fight over. He's just no fun.

I can't believe they doubled down on both big criticisms from the base game, the Marauder and the Purple Goo in Part Two! Talk about chutzpah. I never had a problem withthe Marauder, but the goo is still shite and I don't know why they brought it back.

The story is mental. Like, proper batshit. It's like someone saw a Metallica LP cover and did some fanfiction. But it's great. I'm not sure the final twist works (it's cool, but it literally doesn't make sense within the fiction they've created) but it's all gravy.

I, shock horror, actually enjoyed the final boss. I saw ResetEra moaning about it, but I think it was by far the best boss Id have done. They straight up said they were trying to make it feel like a one v one deathmatch encounter and while I think it falls a little short of that, it's pretty damn good.

As a package, ETERNAL now ranks amongst the greatest shooters ever as far as I'm concerned. It might not have the fuck-you attitiude of DOOM 2016 (yeah, rip) but in terms of sheer fun and exhilaration I cannot think of another game that matches it.

EDIT:

OH. I forgot, like, the biggest disappointment:

The music.

Although not bad by any stretch, it all felt incredibly generic. Mick Gordon melded synth and metal together to make something that sounded truly unique, but the DLC music is just bland industrial metal with none of the heart of Gordon's stuff. Which is a massive shame.

Have they said anything about a next gen update? I wouldn't mind playing it again.

They've said more updates are coming later this year so I would expect it.

RTX update would be interesting, would love them to add ray traced lighting. Performance wise the engine is slick as strawberry float already so it has the headroom for more costly effects

Think I'll play this again on, but my new PC, when the weather is cooler. Will definitely get the DLC this time.

What temps you hitting? You could pull more air through that mesh front I reckon.

That RGB cooler is decent. But it’s not a proper aftermarket cooler, but they are more than £20.

I started this, but found it hard… couldn’t get into a groove. I’ll dip back in when the ray tracing pops in.

I'll have a play with RT mode for gooseberry fools and giggles but it feels pretty superfluous in this - you move so fast there isn't really time to take in any fancy ray tracing effects!

Which Quake though? Original Cthulu style, NiN medieval madness, or the Strogg stuff we've had since 2?
