It's testament to how moreish the game is that I'm planning to go back and blast through extra life mode, I think.

I think there's potential for a lot of people to hate the twist ending at the end of Doom: Eternal's first DLC but I am all in for it. And I love the mythology they've created around Doomguy. It's absolutely wonderful.

Has the dark Link thing been done to death? Of course. But it works in this instance. The only person fit to lead hell is Doomguy himself.

Is the DLC worth it then? Been hesitating for a few days now...

I thoroughly enjoyed it. It starts where the game left off, so it's tough as nails, but three levels of more Doom isn't going to go far wrong. And again the story is suitably mental too.

Still not clicking with me entirely. Just did The Cultist Base level. It's not really been too hard, but I'm not finding it as fun as I probably should be. It's really weird. I think part of it is how weak the Doom Slayer feels this time around to me.

The game clicked into high gear for me on the next level when I picked up the Super Shotgun - after that it was all systems go.

Probably best for someone who has played the whole thing to comment, I'll stay out of this for now

I enjoyed both of them a lot and they are, broadly at least, very similar games. But Eternal does expand both the combat and the narrative side in ways that polarised opinion to an extent.

For me the changes to the core of the game made it an even better experience than 2016.

What are the major changes to the core, without giving too much away?

In short there is just a bit more going on for the player to manage. For me it enhances things greatly but some find it fiddly/hard.

More info below if you want to read, not massively spoilery but hidden just in case.
Ammo, health and armour are a more precious/limited resource in a sense - you need to mix things up more to keep refuelling each of these things to an extent that wasn't really necessary in 2016.

Combat itself has more "verbs" so to speak, 2016 was very much "shoot in face, glory kill, shoot in face" repeated with the odd bit of chainsawing mixed in. In this you are very quickly moving between different attacking options - flamethrower, different grenades, chainsaw, glory kill, guns etc. which is admittedly a more complex gameplay loop but is also more rewarding IMO. A limited number of enemies have to be approached in specific ways to be successful, just shooting the crap out of things works 90% of the time still but it's not always the case.

There is also a bit more "platforming" type gameplay - it's still relatively limited but it annoyed some people. And they go a bit heavier into the story side of things - it's still predominantly a sideshow but it's slightly harder to ignore this time around.

I beat the Arc level. This game is a real mixed bag for me. The standard combat has actually became fun but the rest of it :dread:

Game has some completely baffling design choices. Whoever thought of putting that purple sludge in the combat areas is a strawberry floating idiot. And the platform sections are mostly complete arse. And the Marauder is just shite.

Yeah I hated the Marauder as well, especially that stupid ghost tiger it can summon endlessly, including immediately after you kill it.

Purple sludge: Honestly one of the oddest design choices in years.
Platforming: I like them
Marauder: Never had a problem with him, especially once you figure out the Super Shotty/Balista one-two.

It's definitely a messier game than the first, which has a much (much) better tone and sense of self-awareness. But 2016 just takes too long to get going for me. It's not until the BFG Division that it actually gets proper good, whereas Eternal is incredible from the start.

Not really my experience with it. I've only really started to enjoy it in the last level. And even that had some annoying design choices (the aforementioned purple crap and the Marauder).

When it comes together, it is excellent. The massive gun battle in one of the sections before reaching the big cannon was amazing. I got killed part of the way through it and I was raring to go again, which is something that 2016 made me feel continually. And I have a feeling the next level will be fun Doomguy going to fire a massive BFG at Mars?

Yeah, maybe incredible isn't the right word. Kinetic? I'm replaying 2016 now and it feels so slow!

I honestly can't remember any purple sludge which makes me think it wasn't that big a deal.

I get why people might not like the Marauder, but for me it was a great addition to the game, pushed a bit of a gear shift onto the player that was refreshing. Also it's a piece of piss to take down once you get the hang of it

I'm at the point of no return seemingly. I might go back and get more crystals.

The Mars level was the best in the game so far. It felt like a 2016 level, and Doomguy was back to doing stupid gooseberry fool again BFGing Mars and getting fired out of a cannon.

The next level was kind of annoying. They started introducing the Marauder into normal combat scenarios and it's a dreadful idea. That enemy is just gooseberry fool game design.

The Marauder gooseberry fools me up whenever he pops up, but you only have to fight five or six in the whole game.
