I need to give Doom another play through at some point, it's fantastic fun.

It's now included with Game Pass on Xbox so I'm going to give it another whirl as well and maybe even try the multiplayer.

I haven't actually tried the multiplayer on Doom, what's it like?

I never got on with it. Loadouts and boring levels just failed to grab me. It didn't feel like Doom Multiplayer. It was developed by an external developer which might explain it though.

I remember when the DOOM beta hit...and everyone was massively disappointed. This was because it consisted solely of a few levels for the MP. Weirdly enough, I think this worked in the main game's favour as expectations were already pretty low but after the beta everyone expected a 7/10 dull shooter from a id Software heading for their twilight years. Instead it ended up being the best shooter of the generation and id remain resurgent.

I won't expect a great deal if I get around to trying it then!

So my interest was piqued in Doom Eternal when everyone started crying online about the voiceover Taf mentions above. I've always been so-so about the last Doom (it looked fantastic and, on PS4Pro (the version I have) it runs beautifully, but I always found the moment-to-moment gameplay a little too one-note), but I'll buy into this next game only if ID refuse to make any concessions to these insufferable critics and keep the voice-overs exactly as recorded in that demo gameplay. The moment they cave, it's a no-sale for me. It's time there was a little more resistance, a little less apologetics.

Why is it that these days every time - every single time - I consider buying a new game I first have to research whether or not it's been 'got at' by the usual social justice crowd first? This is why I won't purchase games like Far Cry 5, or Wolfenstein II. I'm quite proud of my stance on this. Money talks, and if enough of us withold our custom on a matter of principle from certain 'problematic' games that have clearly been tampered with to mollify a certain small and loud but wholly unrepresentative section of the public then perhaps we will see developers growing back a spine and return to making the games they want to make.

I wouldn't say Far Cry 5 has been "tampered" with. It deliberately sets out to try not to offend anyone, sure, but that's just what happens when you make a AAA mainstream blockbuster title. Far Cry 5 has absolutely nothing interesting to say about politics from any angle.

On the topic of Doom, I finally tried out 2016 at the weekend on my friend's switch. Finished the first level, found it pretty forgettable. The level was bland and for some reason I found it easier to find the secrets than it was to find the actual route to progress. I just don't think the Doom aesthetic is for me.

I'm going to play this because killing Demons is fun.
If that makes me a bad person I'm an atheist so I don't give a gooseberry fool anyway so there. I also vote Lib Dem which makes my vote pointless anyway so yeah, checkmate somehow.

Replaying it, the one criticism I have it that it takes too long to get going. It doesn't get really good until you get the jump boots, and that's a good few hours in. Only after that does the game proper rear its head.

On the other hand, the aesthetic doesn't really change, so you may be right.

I haven’t played or followed Far Cry 5 at all but was curious as to what was “wrong” with it. From what I gather it is a game where the bad guys are the far right that have taken over America?

I guess it is easier to boycott the game, rather than risk spending money on a game that will make you shoot your comrades. Never mind, maybe Far Cry 6 will let you shoot brown people instead.

It's not that weird a stance if you are alt-right or an actual Nazi....

I have Far Cry 5 and it's a pretty rubbish caricature of US culture so reading anything real into it is pointless. It would be like trying to claim the Fast & Furious films are serious racing films and the infinite gears and nitrous(sp?) is exactly what happens in F1.
It's a game it isn't trying to be the history series Vietnam and people getting offended by it are missing the point that it's supposed to be entertainment not a teaching aid about US culture.

If we're addressing this:

- I hated the "Demon is an offensive term" joke because it takes the "x is offensive term" phrasing, often used by people from minorities to protect themselves from hate speech, and pokes fun at it. It's misjudged, and exactly the sort of cheap, no-thought line you'd find on a Steam group with a Pepe logo.

- I don't understand the Far Cry 5 problem at all. Originally, the game was set to place white Christians as the enemy, with a lot of the early marketing concentrating on their redneck nature, before Ubisoft stripped all that back and turned them instead into a cult (and massively changing the marketing thrust to boot). If anything, it was the relentless calls of "this is a white man murder simulator" from the alt-right sensitives that led to this change of tack.

- Wolf 2 is about killing Nazis. Not to quote Sarah Sanders or anything, but Cal's saying more about himself than us with that one.

But let's not get bogged down in this. Cal is an alt-righter, banned from Off Topic because of his refusal to debate or even respond to counter arguments. He was an avid follower of Milo Yiannopoulos and Breitbark back in the day (how many people have forgotten that?) and is, as far as I'm concerned, a non-entity.

strawberry float Cal.

Now.

Pretty much this. It's sub-GTA level satire that doesn't even commit to a single viewpoint

100% this.

My only worry is I didn’t expect much from Doom 2016 and so it blew me away thanks to the lack of hype. I’ll be going into Doom Eternal with high expectations and so am hoping that I don’t end up slightly disappointed.
