Mmmmmyyyyyeeeeehhhhh.

Maybe. It's been a while. All I recall from my last play through was how piddly the weapons sounded and how bad the story was.

I remember a friend of mine was so excited in the build up to Doom 3. He loved the earlier games and would buy every single magazine that featured anything about Doom 3. He spent hundred and hundreds of pounds on upgrading his PC so that it would play Doom 3 at the highest settings. He talked about nothing else for over a year before the game was released.

And he hated it.

The pea-shooter weapon noises are my dominant memories of Doom 3. So weak sounding :fp:

Mmmmmyyyyyeeeeehhhhh.

I downloaded that once. Unless it's changed (or I'm mistaken) the majority of SFX were low quality rips from the Alpha.

I dunno. D3 was perfect for my 18 year old self, but my memory of it is one of a very "18 year old boy" game, all jump scares, shadows and stupid catchphrases.

"You're the control. I'm the damage."

D3 was a decent game in many way but it wasn't "DooM" enough for most people I think.

The originals were lightning fast gun ballets against large hordes of enemies played across cleverly designed, sprawling maps and all set to a fantastic soundtrack and spot on SFX. D3 was a slow paced jump shooter with several odd design choices but some fantastic visuals (for the time). I liked it enough at the time but it's the only game in the series I've never replayed.

For some reason I'm less excited about Doom Eternal than I thought I would be. I really enjoyed Doom 2016, and it wasn't because of the "lowered expectations" that others have mentioned as a bonus factor acting in its favour - I got it a good 6 months after release when everyone was (rightly) hailing it as the best shooter in years. So I should be really looking forward to Eternal but I can't put my finger on why I'm not, I guess part of it is a fear that the model laid down by 2016 could grow stale if not mixed up enough and what we have seen of Eternal so far does look very similar?

Well, that's a shame. Personally, I got a lot out of Doom 3 (and I'm not just talking about those incredible space corridors). It was the first game that introduced me to level design with the map editor that became available. That led me to 3D design, texture design and so on. Seeing how this all married-up with my existing graphic design skills was an interesting journey. Doom 3 itself wasn't a brilliant game - I guess - but I did enjoy the story (such as it was). I became fascinated by the untold story of Dr. Betruger and his seduction by the powers of evil he unleashed through the portal. It was a shame that story was never explored - for me, it was by far the biggest missed opportunity. I did like the story beats of the data logs and audio files - that drip-drip of something awful slowly overwhelming the Mars facility as the first few disturbing incidents spiraled into absolute disaster. Again; it was probably a far more interesting story than the one we got in the game.

A story of a man sucked down into a dark hellhole full of creatures with horrible, horrible ways, who then emerges from said hole to plague the earth with his newly found abhorrent beliefs?

Sounds...familiar.

No wonder you strawberry floating liked it.

Yeah I'm sick of jokes like this, thoroughly witless and punching down on marginalized groups. Got people who I otherwise like in social circles who say similar rubbish, one the other day with the '''zinger''' "Umm excuse me Nintendo you have no octolings at this Splatoon tournament, I consider that RACIST" :fp:

I've seen some people argue that it's satire on corporations inappropriately coopting progressive rhetoric for selfish reasons, which I'd like to think it is...but even then you know lots will laugh with it at the expense of identity politics.

Unpleasantness aside, Doom 1-2* and 2016 are my favourite FPSes ever and I cannot wait for this <3 And yes that Mario Odyssey mashup

*still haven't played 3 <.<

Brerlappin wrote:Personally i think theres 2 types of Doom players: The PC owners, who grew up playing Doom with the awful midi synth rock soundtrack which made the game feel more fast paced and it was all about the speed and violence, and the people who grew up with the PSX version and the Aubrey Hodges soundtrack that turned the games atmosphere completely on its head and made it feel like you were playing a waking strawberry floating nightmare and made the game feel more like some kind of claustrophobic horror title. As the latter, i could appreciate Doom 3 a lot more than people who only knew the PC version, at least, thats my take on it.

hey hey hey as an avid fan of PC Doom 1&2 plus their modding scenes i think this is totally unfair
the people youre pejoratively referring to are actually the people who download Brutal Doom and the "metul" mp3 soundtracks and mod it in. actual OG Doom fans appreciate the subtle moments of Doom just as much as the fast-paced highs.
check out this demo of one of the best levels of the PWAD (custom mapsets) Sunlust for an example ;)

Oh wow. I did not know this existed and yeah, I can definitely see the thematic link between this and Doom 3. Spooky as strawberry float.

I mean

PSX version

vs

Classic PC version

I can't really disagree with anything else you've said re: D3 though. Well, not entirely. I wasn't as taken with the enemy designs as you were, the Imp in-particular is generic as strawberry float, but you're right about the depiction of Hell; it was downright boring in 2016. Still, that's one of the improvements Eternal seems to have made: the Hell elements look far more organic and interesting.

EDIT: As an aside, DOOM on PC was still scary as strawberry float. Some of the tracks were spoopy as, too.
