Just been watching some of this on Twitch, and there's a guy playing on nightmare difficulty, with the explosive upgrade on the shotgun, and he's one-shotting nearly everything with it. Still getting slaughtered. Looks mental.

Frag grenade feels almost entirely useless right now. They tell you to throw it down a Cacodemon’s throat when you first get it but the arc is so shitty and tough to predict (despite Doomguy’s immensely vascular tree trunk arms) that you’re better off just using the grenade launcher on the shotgun.

Maybe there’s an upgrade to make it viable, or maybe I’m missing something.

Its been a long time since I played Doom 2016 but I don’t remember ammo being such a struggle to resource manage. Every single fight without fail it is an issue to keep on top of it.

Completed the first two missions and echo jiggles thoughts, though the dash button hasn’t been an issue at all. The extra story stuff is a bit weird and there feels like there’s a lot more fluff around the game that seems rather out of step with the ethos of the original. It’s not really a negative yet, just odd.

Played about an hour of it now, it's strawberry floating intense as you would imagine. Guns feel great and the soundtrack is as good as ever.

Story hasn't really got in the way any more than it did in 2016 but it's early days so that might change.

Don't often but games at launch but seeing as I have a week off and won't be going anywhere it seems like a sensible choice.

I'm not going to get this for a while, but I loved the last game, so I'll definitely be picking this up.

I played a bit last night, weirdly they changed the controls around a bit on PC. Glory kill is now on e rather than f, so it's messing with my muscle memory a bit. Did this change on console too?

For some reason I played the first game using my controller even though I was playing on PC so I hadn't noticed the change in controls. I'm seriously tempted to pick up a mouse with more than three buttons on it now though - having glory kills and chainsaw on the mouse would be so much more intuitive!

I'm kind of missing the Mars/space station vibe from the first game a bit. It's still a strawberry floating stunning game (and runs perfectly even on my less than state of the art machine) but I'm not as impressed by the "Hell on Earth" aesthetic.

Isn’t it supposed to have some crazy high recommended specs? What specs and settings you running it with?

Just played a few hours and it's a good laugh. Won't convince you if you didn't like the one that came out a few years back but it's fun.

strawberry floating hell though, platforming sections. :x

ryzen 3700x
gtx 1660

1080p, fov 90. Most stuff on high, one or two on ultra, AA on, that gives me about 100fps. But now you mention it, I'm going to see if I can push it a bit harder in the nvidia control panel. I also haven't installed the game ready drivers.

There's some pretty cinematic moments too, no spoilers but there's a lot of attention paid to the world around you. You do get a real sense that you're walking though the aftermath of a strawberry floating devastating war, with ruined EVAs and huge dead demons everywhere. That said, it does seem to have rolled back a bit on the 'I'm gonna punch this display that's playing the exposition holograph because all I wanna do is shoot demons' attitude of the original, but it's not as intrusive as I read. You still don't need to pay attention to the story but there's still a bigger attempt to make a narrative with (short and skippable) cut scenes and stuff.

Also maybe I'm just gooseberry fool but it's not easy. I'm on the normal difficulty and I'm still getting kicked in the nads on the regular. The normal progression is a doddle but it keeps dropping you into these set pieces where there's a fuckton of really strong enemies and you gotta figure out an attack pattern. Wouldn't exactly call it a strategy but you've def gotta remember the spawn order of the toughest enemies in order to have a chance. That said, on a fair few occasions once I've cleared out the enemies on my whatever'th attempt, I sweep the area and find loads of ammo and health items I missed so once again; maybe I'm just a bit gooseberry fool.

The book shelf in the space ship made me giggle, having a strategy guide for Quake on it, and loads of other books referencing other games.

With that cpu and gpu I reckon you should easily be able to play this game with everything on ultra and the very least. The game uses lots of VRAM on the max ultra/nightmare settings though. Almost full 8gb.

Thanks for the advice zxe. Unfortunately geforce experience doesn't have the auto-optimise stuff for Doom Eternal yet, so we're going manual tweaking. I'll take your advice and have a skim of this article as well:
