That's exactly why I love it. It's a proper old school, turn based RPG with a modern sheen and high production values. We rarely get them anymore and it seems every other RPG has those awful real-time systems that I just don't get on with. Those types of RPG are fairly common these days.

It's why the news of FFVII remake having a "classic" mode has made me far more interested in it.

So Dragon Quest is fine just as it is and thankfully hasn't gone down the real-time route. :toot:

I’m not too keen on how it all feels like an old-school Dragon Quest with a modern veneer. Perhaps it’s silly of me to expect anything else, but after the glorious cut-scenes of the opening and seeing the environment I thought we’d be in for more of a Xenobladey affair. Instead we have a very standard turn-based game. Moving characters in battle is pointless and the glorious lush world feels like window-dressing.

It’s early days, but I can’t deny a smidgeon of disappointment.

Maybe try switching to the top-down sprite mode? ;)

It’s tempting, that mode seems more honest.

We had one last year in Octopath and while that game had its flaws, I preferred its battles. It didn’t feel like it was pretending to be more than it was. I’m hopeful that the turn-based system will open up as I have really enjoyed TBSes in the recent past (Octopath, Pokémon, Bravelies), but at this stage it seems not only dull and unimaginative but misleadingly so.

i found the tbs really opens up very quickly once you grab some more characters and i actually found it overwhelming by the end because i had so many options (x number of characters with 20+ spells and abilities = paralysing choice in battles!)

Think I've just finished the first act? (the big bad guy has just turned up and ruined everything)

Is the second part really going to start with you playing as each character individually for a bit? Just done Sylvando's Smile Squad and now I'm playing as Jade (with another bunny girl suit? :dread: ). Kind of stalls the progression a little bit!

On my way to getting Jade back, but I've stumbled at the Jade/Booga boss fight :x

How do I check what resistance I've got to certain statuses? I seem to spend the entire fight either getting charmed (puff-puff) or dancing :fp:

Item descriptions will mention if they have a status resistance, but I think you can press a button on the equipment menu- I think Square/Y- to scroll through an item's stats, resistances, and crafting bonus charts.

If you're not already using Sylvando, I strongly recommend him. I found his Sobering Slap crucial to this fight.

Y'all are so far ahead of me. :( I got it at presumably the same time and, due to mixing with other games, have only just got Erik's treasure.

As an aside, no save points in dungeons is a DQ staple they really should have nixed by now.

Thanks. I've only got like four people at the moment ( :x ), so Sylvando's always up. I don't understand why the bosses seem so difficult at this point in the game. I'm strolling around the map wiping out normal enemies in a turn or two, and then I stumble into a boss fight and I'm absolutely flattened in one turn (well, I have one turn, the boss takes three in a row :x )

Went exploring the rest of the map because I couldn't get past Booga, and discovered Tatsunaga in Hotto. Breezed the first stage, and then in the second I'm dead in a turn or two :fp:

Is it just a case of grinding another few levels, or am I doing something drastically wrong with my equipment? This second act has properly killed my enthusiasm. All the worst RPG tropes :(

EDIT: Have attempted to forge a bunch of fire resistant stuff and a few new weapons. Will give it another go in a bit! Cross everything.

The traditional DQ whimsy is out in force, I see: just come across the village where everyone speaks in haiku. Because of course.

Slow and tortoise-like
Can appreciate a game
More than faster hares.

I’m alternating
Dragon Quest with Ori and
Link’s Awakening

So it takes longer.
Also there’s the small matter
Of a social life...

But yes, it’s still fun.
I like the red-hooded mage.
Battles still dull though.

That was a lot better than I managed. Finished Act 2 now, and so I've gone back and beaten Mordegon, but right this time (get kinda Endgame vibes from the whole thing :shifty: )

Now I'm grinding at the casino :x That jackpot quest will be the death of me.

It takes a while, but you can cheese it. In the 2nd casino, there's a bunny girl by the roulette table who tells you if you're likely to win the jackpot. You're looking for her to say something along the lines of "Somebody's gonna win soon! I can feel it!"

Keep resting at the inn until you get that line from her, then just keep putting minimum bets on one number at the roulette table.

It's tedious, but it works!
