I feel like I'm stuck in a loop with this game at the moment. I trundle along enjoying the plot for a couple of hours, reach the boss monster of the week, get my arse handed to me in a matter of seconds, and then lose all will to play the game for a solid week, after which I come back and sail through.

Like the other day, after leaving Sniflheim in Act 2, and spending hours doing a rare monster quest (bringing everyone to around Lv.46), I walked up the path to Arboria and immediately got my gooseberry fool rocked by the stupid Auroral Serpent out of nowhere. It completely drains my motivation, and it's starting to sour my experience with the game.

I feel like I should turn off the Draconian Quest modifier for the sake of my sanity, but then I'd feel like I'd failed.

I’ve been playing the game strictly vanilla and have never really had much trouble. If anything I’ve usually been a little overpowered.

Closest I came to being wiped out was a battle near Gallopolis. I survived (just) and then spent a little time levelling before progressing.

Are you serious? I'm playing on standard difficulty and have wiped so many times  (I'm trying to think how many times, now... less than 5, I think.) All on bosses, though. I got Sea Monster boss down to deep orange text... and wiped  :fp: Not bad for being half asleep, but I was so tired that I forgot to replenish consumables. Will fry it up later today.

Just reading your comments, does this game require you to do a lot of grinding? Or is there a mode that limits the amount of grinding you have to do?

I’ll give the bosses their due as they’ve usually been a bit of a challenge but I never really felt I was in danger of a game over.

I’d read a lot of stories online about a particular boss in part 2 that seems to have given a lot of people a lot of trouble but I killed him first time.

I farmed a load of Metal Slimes around Gallopolis to get a good level boost relatively early in the game, I rarely avoid battles and I’m always improving my gear although that is proving increasingly difficult now.

DQ games in general are quite grind heavy but this is nowhere near as bad as III or VII.

this is not a grind heavy game - i avoided almost all mob encounters in the first 2/3rds of the game and only really had trouble on some of the bosses.
the post-game is quite grind heavy though - although mostly spent collecting materials and improving your equipment rather than mindlessly farming experience on mobs.

@Chocolate-Milk i would turn off Draconian if this is your first playthrough. the game is surprisingly deep and i would have hated the game being harder when i barely know the intricacies of crafting, stats, abilities etc.

It's my play style that has made it a bit of a grind for me.

After reaching the end of several RPGs in the past only to find I was grossly under powered and simply couldn't fight the end boss I always spend way more time battling monsters than I probably need to. I don't have time to reach the end of 100+ hour game only to find I have to start over.

I'm 90 hours in, it's a matter of pride at this point.

Took down Sea Monster :toot: No one died :D And I only used a couple of the consumables - none of which were the leaf.

Looks like I'll be getting Erik back next. The gold skeletons running off with the gold person was pretty funny

Glad it's not overly grind heavy, thats the only thing I was concerned about. I don't usually play RPG's (The only one's I have really played are Pokemon and the Mario & Luigi games) but I am looking forward to getting stuck into this.

Erik's back and better than ever :toot:

Is there anywhere in the game which gives an explanation, even a very basic one, for the character stats?

I need to get back to this lest I forget what’s going on entirely as I don’t intend starting over... thankfully the game reminds you of what’s just happened so that helps.

I took a little break as I was burned out from playing both this and DQIII at the same time. I’m still not entirely done with DQIII, I have the post game boss to fight but not sure I can be bothered with the 15+ level grind I need to endure before I’d even stand a chance of beating him within the required number of turns.

Just beat it. Only just.
Man, absolutely f*** paralysis and characters falling down. :x And bosses who take 2 goes per turn!! How the fight went: Sylv was last man standing   His hardest hitting spell (the one that showers the enemy with love) even caused the dragon to be struck by paralysis! HA!

What came soon after:

I did not see that coming ( ,..) All this time I've been wanting to get back to Arboria and that's what's been waiting for me?! F***ing hell.

Is this your first DQ? Bosses (and even some regular enemies) attacking multiple times per turn has always been a thing in this series.

False wrote:is this a good one for a first timer?

Yes! It's perhaps the most accessible game in the series for a newcomer.
