Dreamcast - Official Topic

The Dreamcast (code-named Black Belt, Dural, Dricas, Vortex, Shark and Katana during development) is Sega's fifth and final video game console and the successor to the Sega Saturn. An attempt to recapture the console market with a next-generation system, it was designed to supersede the PlayStation and Nintendo 64. Originally released sixteen months before the PlayStation 2 (PS2), and three years before the Nintendo GameCube and the Xbox, Dreamcast was generally considered to be ahead of its time and was initially successful at restoring Sega's reputation in the gaming industry. However, it failed to gather enough momentum before the release of the PlayStation 2 in March 2000, and Sega decided to discontinue Dreamcast the following year, withdrawing entirely from the console hardware business.

It's only right and proper that the Dreamcast gets a decent topic in GRcade. Good job with the presentation - you done it proud. The DC faithful are grateful. 8-)

It's great to see the DC topic come across. Nice work, Nick!

My DC has been broken for nearly a year now! I always keep meaning to get around to fix it, but laziness gets in the way. I'll need to look for a video on YouTube so I know what I'm doing.

For me the dreamcast was the very definition of a complete console, it had the graphics, the games, the excitement and was future proof, or so we thought!

It featured some of the best games ever made and produced a legend that was never to be completed (shenmue), but also awesome arcade games (daytona usa 2001) and original games (jet set radio).

It also gave me my first experience of online gaming and was a pleasure to play on and i still take it out every now and then to play it through a vga cable and it looks fantastic! :D

Damn right. It was my first taste of VGA console gaming. And it does still look the nuts.

Loads of great games, loads of underated games and definetly a favourite.

One underated game Id recomned is Millenium Soldier Expendale which is an awesome old school shooter. Been playing it for years.

I was going to create this, it's good to see someone already has! :)

I loved the Dreamcast. I'm going to get a pile of games on the cheap for it this year and bring it up to Uni. It's my favourite console of all time. Power Stone is ultimate craic for multiplayer.

Have you got a PSP? Power Stone Collection on there is a must. Brings back so memories and has ported superbly

Sega should port all their Dreamcast games to PSP and Wii!

Soul Calibur, Rez and Ikaruga have proved Xbox Live Arcade is a great place for making money off old DC games too!

Apart from the loading times. It would take ages to get into games. I'm happy enough with my DC copy of the original, although the sound cuts out most of the time, which is annoying. :(

Have you actually played Shenmue these days though? :( If you can get past the horrible dated controls I'm sure it'd still be an awesome game. I must force myself to play through it again one of these days.

I played through shenmue over a year ago and still loved it, i also restarted shenmue 2 quite soon after and got quite far through it, but got to the bit where ryo needed a lot of cash and gave up, for now anyway.

Late last year/ early this year i rebought a lot of dreamcast gems like sega rally 2 and crazy taxi 2 which i sold a long time ago and now have a meaty collection of the best dreamcast games which i am proud to own, i just hope the console still keeps ticking over *touches wood* as it is my favourite console ever and it was such a shame when it went. It was only a few years later that it hit us what amazing first party games sega made for their console and they must return to these ways!

Anyway my dreamcast is firmly packed away, possibly until i go through a next gen crisis when fallout 2, far cry 2 and little big planet all turn out to be crap. The trusty vga cable however will always give me such delight and wonder at how powerful the thing is and such shame that it could not survive, i am just glad i supported it and did not abandon ship to sony like so many did, because it gave some of the most delightful, exciting gaming moments i ever had in my life.

If you go through a gaming lull you must get and complete the game, i recommend the dreamcast original for its japanese voice acting and also for nostalgic purposes. You are in an enviable position, with shenmue 3 now just a dream, those who have not experienced shenmue 2 are in for a treat, it is essentially a well condensed game which actually packs in 3 chapters into one. If the whole game was padded out like shenmue 1 it would have been overly long though!

Yeah it is very hard to hunt down, check out cex stock regularly, thats what i did, alternatively get a dreamcast, a vga cable and the game for under £40 i reckon and play it!

There are plenty of DC games that are really needing re-makes or sequels of some sort. The main one I'd love to see is ChuChu Rocket on XBLA. Give it a graphical overhaul, adjust its online capabilities and it would probably be the best XBLA game ever.

They have it here for a fairly reasonable price, though it's not a company I've dealt with before - I got it the link from an ebay search.

http://www.buykingdom.co.uk/search/shenmue%202%20dreamcast/6-22070822031

EDIT: It's not even a retail company, it just leads to ebay auctions which is pretty bloody strange as none of 'em turned up in a Shenmue II search. :?:
