It was late and I was posting from iPhone and I'd forgotten the date so I think I just guessed what it was...

The VR update arrives today. It'll be interesting to see how the VR integration will work, I wonder if there'll be any 'make it VR' quick tool to convert some of the original creations people have made over the previous months.

It'll be interesting to see new things that people create with this - putting the ability to create new VR experiences into potentially everyones hands is a big deal. Having looked into the tutorials for the standard tools I can see they're very powerful, I just wish I had time in my life to do everything I want to try my hand at.

I hope the quality of creations is good - it'll be amazing having a new endless stream of VR experiences.

However, I do foresee a huge amount of trouser filling jump scares.

Anyone still into this?

Yeah I’m keen to get back in to it. I still think it’s an astounding accomplishment what this game allows for from amateur creators. Can’t wait to check out some of the VR offerings. VR always feels like a premium priced thing, so having access to near unlimited creations is incredibly exciting.

Dreams creator Bad Robbo has produced a stunning new video using of a person walking in park that is so detailed I'm not sure if it actually is real life video footage. It reminds me of the PS5 Unreal Engine 5 demo and I wonder if it is because it's streaming textures? This little demo is another herald of what next-gen might look like. My mouth is watering just thinking about the Elder Scrolls VI with this level of reality!

Anybody still playing this?

Jen Simpkins is the ex-Edge editor and recently joined Media Molecule. She does a weekly round-up list of highlights there called Dreamview Week in review or something (you can follow ItsJenSim on Dreams to see her curations).

I just went through some today and had so much fun with some fantastic concepts and execution. It's a little sad this doesn't have the audience it might do as a bona fide 'YouTube of games', but I wonder if one day it'll end up on PS Plus and get a second (first?) wind.

Will do, I often just play the MM picks each week, bit dull, I know, but if you're time poor, it helps.

I still drop in to this every few months to see what is new. I still think its the most ambitious piece of software i have ever purchased. Recommending playing the "Lock" dream if escape room / visual logic puzzles are your thing - there are some incredibly well laid out ones here.

Does anyone still play this?

I love to dabble occasionally and get a lot of fun out of all the experimental one-offs. I also think it gets me straight to the Game-Fun more than fully fledged games with all their packaging friction (start-up, title, online connect, intro tutorial blah blah). Here I can race and drive and jump and laugh within a few minutes.

But in terms of the more Whole Game experiences on it, I've been playing Trips Voyage:

This is an outrageously polished Mario (specifically Odyssey)-a-like that really scratches that relaxing, exploratory platforming itch.

Do try if you fancy some platforming action!

I still pop in from time to time. Will give this above Dream a try soon. Thanks for the recommendation.

No worries! And do recommend me back anything worth looking at! If enough people care I'll try and write out some previous faves.

This looks utterly brilliant.

What do you think the chances are that all the good Dreams will still be online for the next few years?
Or has the game moved over to PS5 now?

I've often looked enviously at this game in particular. Would get a PS4 when they're super cheap ( :slol: ) specifically for it, but if the content is dependent on the servers being up, it isn't as viable.

I play it on PS5 and bought it digitally on the PS store so it's always around to be loaded up and snacked on/in. The ease with which you can flit between and into games is brilliant.

Looking at the number of people playing some of the top rated Dream right now, it looks like the community is very small now, which is a shame, but unsurprising as it lives very much in it's own little niche with zero spotlight from any gaming news sights. It's an excellent, ambitious product, but it really requires a lot of dedication for almost zero recognition or reward.

I wish they would just put it on PS Monthly and get some big streamers to have a laugh and a play of some of the more oddball stuff so that the exposure goes up and it can become even slightly more the YT of games it was pitched as. It should be pitched as a gaming service/portal more than a game.

I also prefer the kind of unpretentious, focussed and sincere stuff you get on here. Not warped and smoothed and en-boring-ed by the need for sales and marketability and so on. Reminds of me old-school indie weirdness you'd find lurking in some HTML corner page of the old internet ('oldernet'?).

I actually think some of the Media Molecule stuff on there is some of the worst. Art's Dream (the sort-of intro/tutorial/showpiece game the thing starts with) I found properly insufferable. Like being forced to sit-through a Radio 4-comedy style Fringe show but longer and boring-er.

Much prefer to find some random game in which you just jump around inside a snowglobe, but can shake the controller to shake the snowglobe - which provides about 5-minutes of genuine delight, surprise and playfulness.

Edit: Actually now I think it, I think part of the appeal is that lots of the Dreams are more like toys, or experiments or game-ic materials that you play with and prod-about in using a controller, without being forced into the formalities of a cohesive game. And even the ones that are you can just treat as palate-tasting little sessions to mess about in.

Yeah, I agree with all your points. The whole beauty of the service is that you are not paying for each "Dream", so why not make the "headline" developer created stuff simple 10 minute pick up and play weirdness that you would not see outside of some old PD / Net Yaroze game? It goes without saying some community members are going to try and make bloated triple A efforts (and more power to them), but it's the stuff you cannot find anywhere else that is most appealing.

Those first few weeks after release I remember just Dream Surfing from one bit of weirdness to the next. It was incredible.

Media Molecule will be ceasing to support Dreams from 1 September.

Eurogamer wrote:Players will still be able to play, create and share Dreams with others, but no new updates will be released, or game events like DreamsCom, All Hallows' Dreams or the Impy awards. The game will remain available for purchase after 1st September.

MM have already started work on a new, yet-to-be-announced project; but this will not be Dreams 2.

I've not tried Dreams but it looked to be very interesting; albeit perhaps with construction mechanisms a little too deep for mass appeal?

Edit: ...not that there is anything wrong with that approach, of course. Not everything has to appeal to everyone!
