With LittleBigPlanet I tended to play but not create, and it probably wasn't worth the money for that. Is it worth it on this occasion if you don't have much spare time and are therefore more likely to be just playing other people's stuff?

Absolutely worth it in my opinion. I played about 3 hours yesterday and was absolutely blown away by some of the stuff. I am now making a huge list of stuff to play when i get home later.

Great to hear that you're enjoying this, kaz! I've watched a couple of vids and it does look intriguing; it's amazing to see the ideas that people have even if aspects are sometimes a touch clunky. There seems to be lots of potential here.

Some are clunky, some are really polished. The curation is way ahead of what i have seen with Mario Maker also - albums and playlist are being put together by people, and this effort is in turn acknowledged in your community status and title. Sounds like a silly thing, but its this sort of identity that is really important to things like this feeling like a community.
Out of the 6 games i played yesterday, 2 of them were really polished, and all of them were fun in their own way (one of them was also possibly the scariest games i have ever played).

I'm interested in the ones you've seen that you consider really polished. As for my money, even Art's Dream falls well short of that standard.

My profile page for Dreams if anyone's interested:
https://indreams.me/StainyGrimes

The one completed Dream I've made so far, a marble rolling game:
https://indreams.me/dream/mGWAhYLcULz
Never could quite figure out how to give the ball enough friction. I raised the friction setting on the ball and all ground objects to max, and tried different settings for the physics complexity setting but it's still very slippery and hard to control.

I'm quite proud of the effect I pulled off in this scene:
https://indreams.me/scene/dMPQNhsRXbF
I had grand plans for it, but I made it right at the end of the Beta and had to compromise a ton just to get it out in time. The different "scenes" that are visible through the windows of the house were meant to be vastly different instead of just different paintings on the wall, or different rugs on the floor.

The fries with this burger look neither baked nor deep-fried. The rest I'm pleased with:

Have followed you and will check out your level tomorrow. Have been really enjoying the marble rolling game I have been playing (the one on the jump in page that’s split over 2 worlds).

I think Cow Runner single-handedly thwarts any and all criticism directed at the game. Dreams is worth the price of admission for that alone (and I'm only half-joking).

Hey, OSC and kaz, your enthusiasm for Dreams has made me take another look.

I read the review by GameCentral and, whilst un-scored (which I tend to agree with for such a utility), they do indicate that the tools are packed with potential but also that it takes time to learn. Perhaps more interesting was the follow-on interview with Media Molecule; I liked the angle MM took. The community development network looks attractive, too.

My mind is thinking "man, it could take years to learn how the stuff works and it could be £35 gone on playing a few demos" but also "£35 is a bargain for the potential; just building small things could be a lot of fun".

I read that review this morning (i tend to agree with many of their reviews). Unscored makes a lot of sense.

For me, it feels like a mash up of Net Yaroze and The early 90's demo scene. They were very special things to me, and were also things i could only hope to experience as a "consumer" rather than a "creator". For me that's enough, as there is no way or artificially recreating this spirit - it had to be something that genuinely breaks through because of the way it captures the imagination.

That being said, i will probably have a go at making something, but i doubt it will be my premier way of interacting with the software. For me its the ability to dip in to half a done experiences in a 45 minutes of spare time, and see somebody's heart felt project, realized in an amateurish, but entirely sincere way.
The other interesting thing is the way people are really not playing by conventional rules right now, so there is stuff that genuinely feels disturbing / mysterious etc.

I played through this earlier and really enjoyed it - great atmosphere. There was one orb I could not collect because the supporting structure collapsed but I missed the orb and died. On the restart checkpoint it was still destroyed so I could not get to it. But yeah, that’s exactly the sort of 10 minute experience in Dreams I am after.

I've had this since last year and have yet to even play it, seems like I should.

Glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for pushing the total playtime of that dream to a day! Was wondering how long it was going to be stuck at 23 hours.

No probs, look forward to seeing what else you create in the future.

The "time played" thing in my profile seems to be massively inaccurate. It indicates i have played for 14 hours, but i have only had it 3 days, and i most certainly have not put that many hours in. Wonder what its counting.....

I do fancy having a go at creating, but no matter which aspect i consider trying, i quickly become overwhelmed when researching. That said, i have not actually done the tutorials etc yet, so maybe when i get hands on with it i will feel more empowered.

I loved littlebigplanet but i think this is just an app and not a game.

Everything seems bare bones. I'm sure in a year there will be lots of great games on it but at this point it's not worth the money unless you are interested in creating things.

Disappointed.

I mean.... i couldn't feel more differently, but i really think about the effort that has gone in to each "Dream" i play, and find that rewarding and inspiring in itself. If that's not something that really motivates you then i guess your mileage is likely to vary.

Yesterday i played a Warioware knock off, a game that gave me Spindizzy vibes, a really artistically beautiful almost watercolour like open world "game", culminating in a simple simon like piano recital, an adventure game that uses a day night system and tasks you with solving puzzles with minimal guidance (some of which are time dependent), A wild west player piano rhythm game where you dodge bullets, a really disturbing film noir vignette and a FFVII scene recreation. Oh and a Twin Peaks black lodge one as well.

All in the space of 90 mins or so.

If this sounds appealing - you will l love it, if this sounds lacking in depth and not something that makes you want to check in each day to see what is new - your probably right to stay well away.

Yeah, it's not perfect - but still incredibly impressive.
