I'm quite surprised it's not turning up in more GOTS lists.

I don't even know what it is. Is it an RPG? Is it Mech Monster Hunter?

From the makers of Xenoblade Chronicles, so I imagine it to be an Action RPG in that mould.

Probably because they didn't show anything except running and flying in various directions.

What sort of RPG do they make? Are they nice and Mass Effect 1-ish, where no level grinding is required? Do they have FF-style battles, or more open and actiony ones?

I wouldn't know the details, given I haven't properly played Xenoblade. I know, I know, I can sense the raised eyebrows at me making assumptions of a game based on its heritage that I know nothing about, but Xenoblade is very highly regarded. I'm certain it's got a few fans here.

Frankly I don't even need combat. Just give me that gorgeous looking world with transforming flying mechs to barrel around it and I'm sold.

I'm in agreement there, so long as the story isn't an impenetrable mess like so many RPGs seem to be.

What I played of Xenoblade was great. Easy enough to get into with a nice amount of depth but it's not a grind-fest if you're worried about that.

X looks brilliant so far. The Wii U has nearly enough decent games for me to consider buying one to go with my PC and 3DS.

The only other RPG I've played that isn't a Pokemon-style grindfest is Mass Effect 1. How was Xenoblade's RPG stuff compared to, um, that?

Xenoblade is awesome. If X is even close to it. I've not played ME so I cant compare but whilst Xenoblade is gigantic (I mean huuuuge) with plenty of features it does a great job of explaining it all and teaching you. As such its actually quite a slow start. Like you I hardly play big RPG's but I had no problem at all getting into it. It can be a bit of a slog and if your skipping a lot of the optional side quests then it you might find you have to just battle enemies to level up but I beat the final boss with ease as I was completely overpowered. It's also got fast travel, a changeable clock and a handy system which lets you know about collectables before you've started the quest to actually collect them which cuts a lot of the tedium out of it. The story is good and whilst some of the writing is a bit crap I felt it was performed with just the right amount of gusto and melodrama that it was endearing and entertaining enough. A decent review-

Just finished watching this. Nintendo are clearly playing it safe with those titles and it's disappointing not to see anything new or unexpected. That said at the stage Wii U is at in its lifespan it really does need safe bets like those to get the system selling, and hopefully when (if) it does then we will see something a bit fresher. In saying that the new game from Monolith looks stunning.

As for what Nintendo showed from themselves I thought it all looked really good - MK8 seems to take the best of the previous games and looks absolutely stunning, love the new characters in Smash Bros (even Wii Fit lady) and it looks gorgeous as well. Think people are being rather hasty with judging Mario 3D World, because yes it does look just like the 3DS version. However we have no idea of the scale of any of the levels yet and if it really is just a home version of 3D World it's worth remembering that 3D Land is the best Mario game in ages. Wind Waker looks as beautiful as ever and I hope the hints at refining the game really lead to an improved version, either way I'm really looking forward to playing it again.

As a Wii U owner there's plenty to look forward to I think over the next 9 months or so and I'm sure a full 3D Mario, original Zelda and Metroid title are at the very least in production right now which gives an idea of what the future holds for Wii U.

What's that horrible blue border that appears around the screen at times?

I think its a warning for when players are reaching the edge of the screen in multiplayer.

That Donkey Kong screen.

Maybe I'll be called a Nintendo apologist but so be it...

I didn't think it was all that bad. Sure, it was quite conservative - Nintendo are playing it safe. Still there is plenty of exciting stuff to look forward to.

I'm glad to see there will be underwater levels in the new DKCR game. As much as I love the first, I kinda missed those.

At first I was also a bit underwhelmed by the Super Mario 3D World trailer, but they have shown very little, I'm sure it'll be full of surprises. It's made by the team that did the Galaxy games (and Donkey Kong Jungle Beat!)

Really disappointed by the titles they showed and they don't seem to want to embrace the wii u controller.

Until the new zelda arrives its ps4 only.

3DS looks good though...
