E3 2020 officially cancelled due to coronavirus

Update:

E3 2020 has officially been canceled. The ESA, which is responsible for putting on the annual convention, shared the news today following several reports, including GameSpot's, that such an announcement was imminent.

"After careful consultation with our member companies regarding the health and safety of everyone in our industry--our fans, our employees, our exhibitors and our longtime E3 partners--we have made the difficult decision to cancel E3 2020, scheduled for June 9-11 in Los Angeles," the ESA said in a statement.

"Following increased and overwhelming concerns about the COVID-19 virus, we felt this was the best way to proceed during such an unprecedented global situation. We are very disappointed that we are unable to hold this event for our fans and supporters. But we know it’s the right decision based on the information we have today."

The ESA went on to say it would be in touch with both exhibitors and attendees regarding "full refunds." Additionally, it says it is "exploring options with our members to coordinate an online experience to showcase industry announcements and news in June 2020." No further details have been shared on that front as of yet, but it did also confirm that plans for E3 2021 will move ahead "as a reimagined event that brings fans, media and the industry together in a showcase that celebrates the global video game industry."

Even before the Coronavirus E3 was looking iffy as to if it was going to go ahead or not

Guessing the big guys will just host their own live-streams around that time?

Maybe they’ll do it on Zoom.

Pedz and I sorted this out on the twitchcast last week.

Cant see any links (at work so numerous images etc get blocked). Is this confirmed or speculation? Cant see mention of it on the two game websites that are not blocked.....

Not 100% confirmed as yet but many sources have heard that a cancellation is imminent. Devolver Digital also tweeted out saying people should cancel any plans they had for E3

Yeah, the show has been on its knees for a while. The attendee leak last year, the expense, and now coronavirus have killed this off; if not for good then a few years at least.

Looking forward to all the E3 Directs though.

Sad news. Will be curious to see how different it is for us, presumably announcements were already queued up. I wonder if we'll still get them around the same dates or they'll just get scattered throughout the year.

People seem so desperate to have the hottest E3 take it's like they're actively willing the demise of an event almost universally enjoyed.

Ahhh, disappointing but not entirely surprising. I really enjoy all the streamed E3 coverage, even though its nearly always anti-climatic in terms of new announcements.

The whole thing leaks before anyway. May as well just present the leaks in an official way online and be done with it.

The last few E3s have been shite. It hasn’t been good for a while now and the with the shitty direction the ESA are taking it (not to mention their gross incompetence), I’m not the least bit sad to see it go. Nobody needs it anymore. Time to die.

I have really liked E3 for ages, but really didn’t like the new direction it was taking. Refreshing itself with a more influencer-led focus? Nah. I’m not glad it’s (essentially) dead, but the new E3 sounded horrible and we’ll presumably still get a summer Direct (if we ever get a spring one...).

It’ll be a shame to see E3 go, but I think I feel like that just because of nostalgia rather than there actually being a reason for E3 to still exist.

Yeah, most of the fondness for E3 comes from nostalgia since I've probably not watched an E3 conference in four or five years.

It's the gaming media outlets who will suffer most. Think of how content deprived they'll be!

That said, the event has been increasingly digital over the last few years. Perhaps everyone will adopt a Nintendo Direct style finally.
