Is the Visceral studio game the one that is being written by Uncharted's Amy Hennig?

Awful news as this was a talented studio. Must be terrible to be owned by EA and know they can shut you down at the drop of a hat. If alot of AAA games become services as ways of fleecing gamers I'm done with it as a hobby and will stick to retro games

Apparently, going by job postings, that's what this SW game was going to be, anyway. So yeah, strawberry float knows what EA want to turn it into now. Hero shooter / Destiny clone?

It was. Seems EA didn't want a single-player only game. The great 'Everything is Destiny, Everything is Loot Boxes' trend continues to

I can't even remember the last EA game I bought. Think it was either Battlefield 4 or whatever Madden game came out at the PS4 launch.

I remember a Star Wars game was on the front cover of OPM a number of years ago for PS3 and that was cancelled too.

Does anyone who understands business better than me know why they can't just set these companies free to fend for themselves? Like what Eidos and IO did. Besides being evil, obviously.

Sad to see the closure of the studio and obviously it's always gooseberry fool seeing people in the industry losing jobs but they're output post Dead Space 2 (even that gets a lot of negativity on here) has been pretty average and I'd bet commercial failures.

Unless it's an already established brand (such as Shenmue or Broken Sword) it's probably really unlikely a big budget game would ever get close to receiving enough funding from a place like Kickstarter.

Many of the staff will likely go on to work elsewhere, or set up a new developer, but it's never going to be able to produce a game on the scale of what they would with the backing of EA.

You're probably right. I would think a back-to-roots spiritual successor to Dead Space would go down a treat on Kickstarter, especially if it was from the origin developers, but I imagine in the immediate term all their staff will just want some new form of financial stability.

I'll never understand why people with such valuable skills squander themselves in the videogame industry. People always say 'passion', but how passionate can you get about a low rent Battlefield sequel or a lootbox ridden Star Wars game?

“Our Visceral studio has been developing an action-adventure title set in the Star Wars universe,” EA’s Patrick Söderlund said in a blog post. “In its current form, it was shaping up to be a story-based, linear adventure game. Throughout the development process, we have been testing the game concept with players, listening to the feedback about what and how they want to play, and closely tracking fundamental shifts in the marketplace. It has become clear that to deliver an experience that players will want to come back to and enjoy for a long time to come, we needed to pivot the design.”

Yup, marketing nonsense for multiplayer based. strawberry float that noise.

The thing that puzzles me, won't transitioning this into some multiplayer Destiny-alike harm its sales potential? It's putting it direct competition with EA's own Battlefront games, surely weakening it's potential to make a dent in the market. I'm not a fan of the brand, but I thought it was a smart decision to havee a sngle-player Star Wars experience to complement the multiplayer-focused Battlefront, appealing to the other side of the market that isn't interested in multiplayer.

It's clearly bullshit from EA as well about how it doesn't suit the modern market, where in the last few years (hell, this year by itself) there have been a number of single-player titles that did gangbusters numbers.

I can only hope that the pivot isn't some bro gamer Destiny shite produced by a studio that should be making better things, and instead it's gone to Criterion and will become Pod Racer HD, replete with online races, leaderboards, challenge races, pod/rider customization and a full singleplayer story. Almost like a Star Wars-themed F-Zero GX.
