The ending is definitely left open, we don’t even know what happens fully after the final boss fight as William obviously gets his lucky coin back from John between the end of the fight and when we see William in his final scene after the credits. We don’t know where John travels to before seeing Sam again, where they meet and so on. Feels like they’ve left it open enough for a sequel on purpose without really wanting to commit to one as they didn’t know how it’d do sales and reception wise.

Would you get a sequel? The big question.

I think it’d be a maybe leaning towards a yes. I definitely wouldn’t be there day 1 for a sequel though, I’d want to see how/if they’ve made changes to the pacing of the game, if they’ve got rid of rather pointless fetch quests and to see if they’ve taken on board what people have said about the game, both positive and negative.

What were peoples thoughts on this in the end? It’s on sale on Switch for £13 right now

Recommended with caveats. Interesting and weird, one for the open-minded game who can put up with some curious pacing and ambiguous conclusions.

Enjoyable but it felt like it was trying to ape games that came before it

Hmmm, maybe I’ll hold off for now then, I’ll wait and see what comes up in the Black Friday eshop sales

To be honest I’d say if you’ve watched and read reviews, understand some of the fair criticism it got then £13 is pretty fair for it. It really is one of those games that’s worth trying at least, I very much doubt you’ll love all of it but reckon you’ll find some aspect of it you enjoy.

Yep £13 is a good price, and everything else Robbo said.

I never saw the game through, ended up stopping only a few chapters in. I was looking forward to for a long time before launch but it ended up pretty underwhelming. The art is fantastic, at times it is really a lovely looking game, but I found there was no hook to the slowly drawn out story, and while servicable the gameplay was similarly padded. I wish the game was smaller, quicker and tighter.

I think the length of it is my biggest criticism looking back on it, the amount of times where I thought a given quest was there literally to extend the time of the game rather than helping to tell the story was more than I’d have liked. If it was a 15 hour game at most it’d have been even better in my opinion.

I was what, 5+ hours in and on chapter 3 I think? I would have preferred the game starting in that location.

I really enjoyed the first couple of chapters, the change in colour palette as you progressed helped shift the tone of the game almost? Chapter 3 was where it started to feel like a slog though, looking back at a couple of my posts in here I did complain about the fetch quests in chapter 3 and apparently in chapter 4 too, if they’d cut those down to a bare minimum the game would have been better for it.

Oh and off chapter 6 too  I still have no idea what that was actually about!

I don’t know why the developers thought chapter 6 was a worthwhile addition, it added nothing to the story or game, other than increasing play time

My assumption is that somewhere behind Eastward there was a would-be auteur who insisted on it. Nothing else makes sense.

That's the thing about Eastward, it's massively flawed but it's also a really interesting game that I love talking about! So many bizarre ideas. It's in the Iconoclasts bucket for that.

i would guess its cause they were trying to be earthbound and they thought the needed random non sequiturs to do so
