PostEastward - out now!
by Herdanos » Sun May 09, 2021 8:50 am

In August 2019, Nintendo / Eastward's developer(s) wrote:Next stop... Eastward!
In a beautifully-detailed and charming post-apocalyptic world, a miner discovers a mysterious little girl named Sam deep underground in a secret facility... Journey through decaying cities, encountering strange creatures and even stranger people along the way!

In the near-future society is starting to collapse, with the human population shrinks to an all-time low. As the world around falls to ruin, a hardworking miner called John discovers a young girl named Sam deep underground in a secret facility. After escaping the town, the unlikely pair embark on an emotional journey to discover the strange truth about her origins and the mystery behind the sinister creatures who descend on the local towns, devouring everything in their path.

Features:

• Discover the wonderfully weird world of Eastward. Jump aboard the cross-country railway which spans this decaying continent, stopping off to explore its bustling towns, curious campsites and shady forests.

• Fend off peculiar monsters and ferocious bosses with your weapon of choice - be it a gun, flamethrower or your trusty ol’ frying pan.
• Switch between controlling John and Sam to solve environmental puzzles and fight your way through formidable dungeons, separating to unlock hidden paths or sticking together as you traverse a perilous landscape.
• Get to know a quirky cast of characters with oodles of personality, as you immerse yourself in this heartwarming story-driven adventure, packed with fun and wacky humour.
• Inspired by 90s Japanese animation, the vibrant world of Eastward is brought to life by a combination of innovative modern 3D lighting techniques and soulful retro-pixel artwork.

Eastward arrives in 2020.

An official Nintendo webpage still exists: https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/eastward-switch/

You can add the game to your wishlist here, but it won't show up if you then open said wishlist in the eShop.

I'm hoping that this is still in development despite the pandemic - it looks great.

This looked great when they showed it off during the indie stream when it got announced.

There’s another game that’s similar, like a Harry Potter-esq witch and wizard game?

I was thinking of Witchbrook, similar graphical style but not the same gameplay wise

There's also Ikenfell, which has Mario & Luigi-esque fighting, Mother-esque visuals, and is also about a wizard school!

Eastward looks completely different, potentially intriguing. Don't remember reading great things about Chucklefish though (can anyone confirm?).

In what way balla? An old onm forumite (samuri) worked on starbound and wargroove although I think he doesn't work for them any more. I really like wargroove! This is published by chucklefish not developed though (I think). I've been following it since it was announced, the art is fantastic. I see the Earthbound comparisons but it is definitely its own thing

I may be misremembering. I thought that the ethos of the company wasn't meant to be great, but I wouldn't be willing to stand behind that in court.

Then again, Ikenfell is by Humble I think. My defence is that it pre-dates their slider bollocks.

Ikenfell is by Happy Ray Games, it's only published by Humble.

Ah, fair enough. Much like this is only published by Chucklefish! And it's always the publishers that turn out to be the baddies anyway. (Sweeping generalisations ahoy!)

Anyway: Ikenfell is quality. What? Oh. I mean, Eastward looks quality.
