I could understand a 7 from Edge, a technical update and expansion of the ideas in the original could only be worth the same as the original, I could understand that point of view (even if I didn't agree with it).
But there is stuff in the review that can't be explained away, quite how they came to the conclusion that some information boxes reminding people to take a break means that the game is controlling and solemn about how much fun it wants you to have, I don't know, its just a silly thing to say. Its a bit of a shoddy review really.
Is Wii Sports the game against which this should be judged? It is 3 years later and better games have been and gone. I would argue in video games terms that sequels need to be better than the originals just to stay the same in terms of score. The riposte here is that Resort is better, so why not a 7. But in a way, if Resort has failed to address some key issues with Sports, such as longevity and the sense that it remains a mini-game compilation, perhaps Edge do not consider it a big enough evolution for the score to stay still.
