PostEdinburgh forumites, need chippy advice
by Dowbocop » Fri May 18, 2018 9:48 am

Hi all,

Going on a stag do to Edinburgh in a couple of weeks and we wanted to make the stag eat some unconventional fried food. I know Glasgow is the traditional home of deep fried Mars bars etc, but could anyone recommend a good "We'll deep fry anything" shop in the vicinity of the Museum of Modern Art?

Thanks in advance!

This doesn’t help you at all, but I had a deep fried Mars bar at Reading festival a few years ago.

It was strawberry floating delicious. :datass:

I hate this stereotype. I’ve never even seen a deep fried mars bar and have lived in Glasgow for 25 years.

I'm the same. Never seen one, never known anyone who's had one.

Loved the section in Avengers where they were in Edinburgh, but the sign in that Chip Shop windows that said "Yes we will deep fry your Kebab!". :fp:

It's a lazy stereotype, right up there with Tartan and Shortbread. Or the Irish and drinking. Or the English and Tea.

I'm sure I saw a chippy near me offering deep fried creme eggs around Easter time.

I live in Cheltenham though, not Edinburgh.

It's not a stereotype if it's actually true, which it is.

Never seen a place in Scotland which sells them, never had one, never known anyone who has.

This post is exempt from the No Context Thread.

I'm in Edinburgh. Have never eaten or seen a deep fried chocolate bar, however deep-fried pizza is a local(?) delicacy. You'd get them in any chippy.

Work colleagues tell me Piccante at the top of Broughton Street does deep fried mars bars etc.

I think the Scottish forumites are protesting too much.

It's ok guys, we all know your blood is 90% lard, 5% batter and 5% Buckfast.

The Scotch on here and their aversion to the loveliness of a deep fried Mar bar is sad to see. Like meeting an Italian who won't try pizza because they are afraid a Belgian might laugh at them.

Does anyplace do deep-fried Mars ice-cream bars? Based on my experience of deep-fried Mars bars (great) and deep-fried ice-cream (great) then I'd be willing to bet that a deep-fried Mars ice-cream bar would be god tier food.

If they don’t do them, then they bloody should. That sounds amazing. :datass:

As the Scottish are obviously keeping locations secret, I thought I would do a search to help Dowbo out.

https://theculturetrip.com/europe/unite ... -mars-bar/

There's quite a few places in Edinburgh on that list that do them.

That's a type of whisky, not a person from Scotland - can't tell if you're on the wind up or not. :capnscotty:

It’s worse than that, it’s like an Italian claiming to have never even seen a pizza and telling everyone that they don’t exist in Italy. ;)

On the subject of Glasgow, was talking to my dentist (who is originally from Glasgow) earlier today and somehow the conversation got onto my irrational fear of false teeth and she said there used to be a market stall in Glasgow that sold second hand dentures and people would actually buy and reuse them :dread: I suspect she was being serious too.
