When he's buying one of the biggest social media platforms and planning to enslave people on Mars?

Yeah, I think we do.

Yeah, he's one of the most influential people in the world right now.

Unfortunately.

Mastodon saw a rise in 30,000 new accounts on the day it was announced Musk was buying Twitter.

£35bn for a cesspit like Twitter :dread:

Hopefully the thing dies on its arse once he takes it over - the world would be a better place without it.

It's mad. Especially when you can just download it for free.

If Musk allows Trump back onto the platform then I’m off Twitter. I’ll start using Truth Social instead.

Isn't Mastodon more of a Discord style setup where you subscribe to specific servers rather than a direct Twitter equivalent?

Pretty much the opposite. Discord is like a closed source centralised IRC. Mastodon is like an open source decentralised Twitter.

Discord doesn't really have "servers" as everything runs through Discord's own infrastructure.

Mastodon instances can be deployed and hosted by any individual. It's federated so different instances can all interoperate, but as a user you can choose which instances you want to access.

If you compare Twitter (or Discord) to Reddit, then Mastodon is like PHPBB or Discourse (or IRC) but with the added bonus of federation. It's basically how social networks and the web should be - decentralised and free.

I meant more in terms of the user experience - on Twitter it's one big area where everyone is shouting into the same box and in theory anyone can see anything. Discord (and my assumption regarding Mastodon) is more "compartmentalised" where you subscribe to sub-areas of interest to discuss things.

Only silver lining from all this nonsense is that he’s likely to lose a lot of money, fingers crossed.

From that article

Another reason some banks opted out is because they feared Musk's unpredictability could result in an exodus of talent from Twitter, harming its business, according to the sources.

Lol even bankers aren't strawberry floating clueless.

I'm 100% on board with Elon Musk monetising Twitter in as many shitty ways as possible.

Just being listening to:

https://openargs.com/oa591-musk-buys-twitter-part-2/

It does sound like buying Twitter is a really bad idea. There's a couple of ways this could go really badly for Musk. For example he will have to keep an equity to loan ratio to back up the money that could really start to hurt him if the Tesla stock value continues to fall.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.
