PostEmbracer Group buys Crystal Dynamics and Eidos/Square Enix Montréal for $300m.
by Monkey Man » Mon May 02, 2022 7:21 am

Embracer Group AB ("Embracer") has entered into an agreement to acquire the development studios Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, Square Enix Montréal, and a catalogue of IPs including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, Legacy of Kain and more than 50 back-catalogue games from SQUARE ENIX HOLDINGS CO., LTD. ("Square Enix Holdings"). In total, the acquisition includes ~1,100 employees across three studios and eight global locations. The total purchase price amounts to USD 300 million on a cash and debt free basis, to be paid in full at closing. Embracer has secured additional long-term debt funding commitments for this and other transactions in the pipeline. The company today reiterates its current Operational EBIT forecast for FY 21/22, FY 22/23, and FY 23/24. The transaction is subject to various regulatory and other external approvals and is expected to close during the second quarter of Embracer's financial year 22/23 (July-September 2022).

Embracer will hold a webcast presentation for investors, analysts and media on 2 May 2022 at CET 09.00. Please find details in a separate invitation that will follow this release.

Bit confused by this...does this include SquareSoft IP and studios? If so, 300 million seems like a steal. Bet Microsoft and Sony are kicking themselves.

Also, one wonders what damage their somewhat unsuccessful Marvel games have had.

300m for those studios and IPs seems cheap. I'm guessing SE were motivated to offload.

I wonder who's gonna eat up Embracer...

Square Enix says the transaction (which was only $300 million) "enables the launch of new businesses by moving forward with investments in fields including blockchain, AI, and the cloud."

Great news!

If that tweet was about Montreal doing Deus Ex as their next game, that's apparently not what they actually said during the conference call. They were supposedly talking about the first Deus Ex game they made, not a future DE game. Shacknews seem to have gotten their wires crossed. (They "broke" the story first.)

Ahh that’s a shame, maybe they will get to Deus Ex one day.

Guess the Marvel’s Avengers game is now dead

I too look forward to the iconic Legacy of Kain series coming back with a new entry called "Legacy of Kain Origins Unleashed GOTY edition & Knuckles featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series, an NFT-powered metaverse AI cloud...thing.

Dang, I hope not :( . Gotta go search out the implications of this buyout.

Embracer Group... haven't they bought up *tons* of companies and licences now?

Edit: ^^^ Yes... 76 studios in five years  .

Edit: And in total they now own 124 game studios!

This is a hilarious way for SE to end their piss-poor ownership of the studios and IP. I mean... 300m?! Are SE a publicly traded company? If I was a shareholder I'd be wanting heads to roll.

Everyone’s gasping at the price tag but the big three IP mentioned are all in decline, Tomb Raider is the only one of those with mass appeal, and with the world’s biggest property under their belt, they produced… that Avengers game.

Eidos Montreal did well with Guardians, but historically they’ve taken acclaimed IP and done worse with them. They were riding on the goodwill from Human Revolution for a decade.

I’m sure Square’s Japanese side is making bank with their Mobile titles and Final Fantasies, so the western side probably just seemed like more effort for less gain. Investors would be sure to see the reallocation of budget from those three to more JP stuff as a huge win.

I’m honestly surprised MS never picked these up for £300mil, with Tomb Raider they could have rebooted that again and made it their own Uncharted. Bringing back Deus Ex could have been a big reveal for a future E3, I get the IP’s and studios haven’t been great the past few years but I’m sure the value is there at that price…..they could have got Gex!

From what I understand SE wanted to sell the studios to have more money to invest in NFTs :fp:

In addition, the Transaction enables the launch of new businesses by moving forward with investments in fields including blockchain, AI, and the cloud.

As the Square Enix president indicated on 1 January, I guess they're focusing on "the 'play to earn' concept that has people so excited". Games becoming more like work... yay! :toot: .

Maybe they can't at the moment until the Activision deal goes through, if it does.

Good point, I guess until that deal is done it holds up any other potential purchases. Good thing i suppose is with Embracer owning them at least the games will be coming out on multiple platforms, hopefully Switch gets some of the games released in the next couple of years

Selling off Tomb Raider especiallt seems like such a monumentally stupid decision.

I know the recent games haven't been amazing but the brand recognition is insane.

*Elden Ring sells 12 million units*

*Platinum's live service game flops*

Square Enix: we need more stupid crypto bullshit in our games.
