Really? I mean, I understand that the point of all those free games is to get people onto the store and to get their contact details, but I'm not sure what other data they're harvesting beyond that. It's not exactly Facebook, is it?

Back in March 2019 there was talk of the launcher mining data from other storefronts including games, expenditure, friends lists, playing habits, etc.

According to that article, it was creating a hashed file of your Steam data without permission, which is bad, but as data infringement of apps go, there are plenty out there that connect way more. It doesn't even appear to send that data to Epic either, unless you then authorise it.

Can't set anything more recent than that, either.

This whole thing is priceless

Quoted from Resetera

Maybe Tim should’ve read to the end of 1984 to see how this was going to go.

I didn't like Epic's tactics in trying to weaponize their fans, but my preferred outcome would be to see Apple forced to change their policies TBH.

Epic announces #FreeFortnite tournament, and an evil apple skin

So there's a tournament, in game skins and free merchandise promoting Epic's lawsuit now. Nothing surprises me anymore.

Epic seeking their own special deal would somewhat undermine their whole ‘fighting the evil overlord for the good of everyone’ rhetoric.

It's not so much that I want Epic to win, as that I want Apple to lose so that they are forced to open up iOS to allow sideloading of applications.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Apple will never open up iOS to allow applications to be installed from other sources. Ever. Their infrastructure and approach is now too privacy and security orientated to ever allow that.

The best you can hope for in this situation is that the developer tax will be reduced, but even that is unlikely. Certainly Epic won't impact that. It would be a goodwill gesture to developers from Apple if it came to that. Alternatively, the second best result from this situation (though indirectly) is that Apple allows game streaming applications.

Given all the information that has come out, Epic doesn't really have a leg to stand on in this lawsuit. They broke the terms of the agreement with Apple which is the basis for the suit.

You can already install applications from other sources on iOS
