I think this is one of those moments were creatives are like, gotta get into games or make indie stuff. Then remember how miserable that actually is and you can look at the payouts for some epic giveaways (admittedly pretty old games way past their prime) and would barely even cover the salary of one person in some cases.

The amount of developers making this sort of money or even close to it is very small. Then again I guess that isn't why you get into it. At some point or another that person was Tim Sweeny though.

Goes to show why everyone wants a piece of the Free-to-play pie.

Insane to think that if Fortnite was a £35 game that there'd only be a fraction of that total profit.

That graph seems to show that giving GTA 5 away for free basically didn't do anything for the Epic store over the normal free game stuff, even though it apparently crashed the server, but Batman killed it.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

Fortnite was originally a £35 game, before the BR part was added.

Didn’t the BR mode get added in after PUBG early access came out and blew up pretty big?

Oh wow, I've no memory of that at all. I've always thought it was FTP.

The battle royale part is, when Fortnotr first came it it was more of a kinda tower defence game. That par of the game you still have yo buy. It's called Save the World. The BR and C
Creative modes are free.

“I played Walmart’s demo on an Android phone (with an Xbox controller) and the experience felt like playing on PS4 and superior to playing on Android or iOS,” said Epic Games co-founder Mark Rein in an email thread from April 2019. Rein also excitedly shares a photo of a game clip with the rest of the Epic Games executive team, showing how Walmart was planning to sell this in stores to let a phone attach to a controller. “They’re going to sell the clip for a crazy low amount, they were saying something like $2,” said Rein.

Its perhaps one of the most impressive 180 turns of a game ever. It was delayed for ages and by all accounts was a fairly average tower defence game that pivoted at exactly the right time.

Yeah it's odd that that mode looks like an add-on now when the F2P part is what everyone refers to as the main game.
