Epic in its filing contended iPhones, with more than 1 billion users, represent their own distinct market for software developers. Epic has argued that Apple has monopoly power over that market because it decides how users can install software on the devices and says it abuses that power by forcing developers to deliver their software through the App Store, where developers are subject to fees on some transactions.

Apple rejected that notion in its filing and said the proper market to analyze the case is the broader video game transaction field, which includes platforms such as Nintendo Co Ltd and Microsoft Corp’s Xbox gaming consoles, which also limit the software that can run on their hardware and charge fees to developers.

Apple says consumers have choices in carrying out video game transactions, including purchasing virtual tokens from game developers on other platforms such as Windows PCs and using the tokens on iPhones with no fees to the developer.

As much as Epic are probably throwing their 14-year-old's microtransaction Fortnite warchest at this, and making insane losses in a bid to upset Steam (which probably is a monopoly as well), Apple are definitely worse on the anti-consumer front and it's about time somebody attempted to hack down their walled garden monopoly over the smart device market. I'll be interested in following the case either way, not that I think Epic are much better. All of these giant tech firms are bellends and have endemic anti-consumer practices in all sorts of fields, but if you're going to let them destroy each other, Apple being the second most richest is an obvious target. Besides that it's Alphabet. I have however always respected Android a little bit more owning to its open source basis and pretty comprehensive controls over app permissions and other respects of privacy. Apples giant and monolithic success through one product (the iPhone) and the highly closed nature of their platform does need some form of regulation or taking down a peg, in my opinion.

The trouble is not oven governments can afford to sue corporations of this size with this much wealth, they will always bow down to whoever lobbies the hardest (especially in the states or other financially corrupt nations) leaving competing or dissatisfied corporations the only alternative power through which to do so. You've got to at least have a little respect for the gall of that, even if the fortune there is so obviously made from exploiting kids.

I would quite like to see the precedent set of device manufacturers losing their monopolies over storefronts on their device. With the absurd RRP of games now and things moving to an increasingly digital only future I’d much rather have options of where to buy my games than be locked into exorbitant prices set by Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft as clearly they cant be trusted to be reasonable.

That's very unlikely to happen here. At best Apple will be made to relax their rules on having to be the only payment provider.

Yeah I think perhaps apple will still take a tax on earnings made through the store but developers and therefor consumers can choose the payment method and potentially which financial institute they want to process their payment, which is good too.

Trial has started, some evidence reveals Sony's been charging some developers for cross-play:
