I just listened to this week's Friendship Onion and Wil Wheaton is the guest.

I feel bad for my Wesley hate now, Wil seems a lovely guy.

The Vengeance Factor

I watched this last night and when coming to write my review couldn't remember hardly anything about it. I've just read the Wikipedia summary of the episode and I'm still none the wiser. I can't be arsed watching it again so either I'm going senile or it was so bang average that my brain just didn't take any of it in.

The Defector

Cracking episode! I like the tension and politics that go on between the Federation and the Romulan Empire and the "is he a spy or genuine defector" story was great.

One of my favourites of all of TNG so far.

The Hunted

The actor playing the PM is a real "that guy". I knew his voice and face but couldn't place him, IMDb shows he's been in everything

A referendum where people vote for the banana split option? How unusual ;)

A decent episode, it suffers slightly as I watched it straight after the Defector.

The High Ground

Interesting terrorism discussions here, I imagine it'd have gone differently if the episode was made just over 10 years later. I certainly don't think they'd have allowed Data to say terrorism is effective and sometimes justified. ;) Nice to know that Irish reunification is happening in 2024 as well!

And that Picard punch! I'd much prefer fighting Will Smith to Patrick Stewart (there's a clue for when I watched this episode)

It's a little heavy handed on the "LOOK! THIS IS ABOUT U.S FOREIGN POLICY!" message, but I really enjoyed the episode.

Wheaton is well known as being quite a lovely guy.

Assuming that you're well into the final season now Moggy?

Looking forward to you getting onto DS9. :D

Nope, not finished season 6 yet.

Although I have seen an episode that was a bit of a preview of DS9.

Yeah DS9 started around the same time as the Season 6 two parter where Picard gets captured by the Cardassians, so they have a wee crossover/cameo with a couple of characters a few episodes later.

Which I think never really made sense in the UK where I’m sure they didn’t start showing DS9 until TNG was basically finished!

There was some cross-over.

Looking at IMDB TNG and DS9 were about 2 years behind the US airdates.

So DS9 started in 1993, while TNG finished in 1994 in the US.
DS9 started broadcast in the UK in 1995, with TNG wrapping up here in 1996.
Though DS9 did get released on video in the UK from 1993 apparently, so if you wanted to keep pace with the US you could buy around 4 episodes a month on VHS.

Ah the glory days of VHS!

Buying two tapes to get a full series of Red Dwarf every year or so was enough for me, can't imagine trying to find room for the endless tapes you'd need for all of Trek!

Especially when each tape only had 2 episodes on it.

Though I do remember once my local library started getting in VHS tapes, there was a reasonable selection of TNG, DS9 and then Voyager once it came out.

Nice VHS fort :datass:

Realised I didn't post my thoughts on last weeks episodes:

The Bonding
Decent enough episode, despite quite being Wesley heavy! It's another "super energy being" episode though which does get quite tiring after a while. As is often the case, the Worf background development here is the strongest thing on show.

Worf enters into the R'uustai with Jeremy, bonding their families together "for all time" that must explain why we never see him again!

Booby Trap
Uh, Netflix must have skipped this one for some reason as I definitely did not watch this recently! I don't particularly like this episode, Geordi is a bit of a dick in it, although Picard steering the ship out of the asteroid field with the ships massive strawberry floating D-Pad is quite fun

Image

The Enemy
Really good episode with some great tension between the Romulan's and Federation, both in the ground level conflict between Geordi and the survivor, and Picard's shaky diplomacy with the rescue ship.

Geordi should definitely have brained the Romulan with a rock when he had the chance though!

The Price
The negotiator, Devinoni, is a right bell sprout in this. No idea what Deanna sees in him, perhaps he's massively well endowed? Given that as a half Betazoid Deanna seems to be quite limited in her telepathic abilities, usually reduced to things like "ooh, I sense maybe some fear around this person..." it feels like as a quarter Betazoid this guy should be about as useful as a magic 8 ball at giving you insights!

And on to this week:

The Vengeance Factor
Not surprised that Moggy struggled to remember this one, it's a very "meh" experience IMO.

The computer's ability to pretty much reconstruct the entirety of someone's obscured face from a photo is a bit suspect, as is the fact that these aliens have apparently worked out how to genetically engineer someone to never age and yet nobody seems interested in that technology!

I'll just modify the main deflector to stimulate a reverse amplification in my brain's neo-positronic cortex.
