Yeah, I dont there there is actually a limit on "this only in 3rds etc." its down to the pub to decide I think. The rules are what measures you can use (pint, half, third) not what strength for which. Until only a few years back it was only Pint and Half until a campaign got the Scooner (3rd) allowed, its why Beer fest glasses used to be pint and half marked but are not 3rd as well

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7688195.stm (considered in 2008 brought in in 2011).

10.7 isn't "that" strong, highest I've had in a pub was Prarie Pirate Bomb at 15% and one of the best beers in the world, was 16 quid for a 330ml bottl, I ended up taking 3 bottle (the stock the pub had) home with me.

https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30356/102340/

Pirate bomb is our beer Prairie Bomb! aged in rum casks. The flavor from the casks helps impart more vanilla and coconut flavors to the beer while helping to add more body and smoothness to the already explosive and expressive flavors of Bomb!

Notes for Bomb as this is an aged version of it
Bomb! is an imperial stout aged on coffee, chocolate, vanilla beans, and ancho chili peppers. The peppers add just the right amount of heat to complement the intense coffee and chocolate flavors. Bomb! has been named a RateBeer Top 100 Beer in the World for three consecutive years!

I tried a 12% beer and while back and too be honest I didn't enjoy it, it's just too harsh.

I've been dieting recently do only been drinking Coors Light* and the odd tipple from the side board. Craving a mango beer, I really wish I could remember the name of one I had in California a couple of years ago, it was perfect.

*I know you guys don't like it but I still think it's nice and refreshing.

It massively depends on the beer.

If it is strong because the brewer wanted to make a strong talking point beer it will be gooseberry fool. But made right you won’t notice the strength, higher alcohol means it can carry much more flavour and character.

In a stout high strength should mean a thicker richer mouth feel and deeper chocolate and coffee notes that will then carry things like whisky ageing, chilli etc. better.

In a pale beer it means much more hopping to get bigger punchier bitter or more tropical flavours from hops without is seeming soapy.

A good strong beer is strong because it is is balanaced with flavour etc. A bad strong beer will taste alcohol harsh because it has been brewed strong “just because” rather than because it is to balance.

There is still a level of acquiredness to the taste as the flavour or so big if you are used to more simple beers it can overwhelm.

I would recommend trying BrewDog Tokyo or BrewDog ChocoPsyco they are great examples of a strong beer that is strong to balance the flavour and experience. Tokyo is especially good, is around 16% and is make with Jasmine and a Cranberries, I like to have one on Christmas Day.

Same on the dieting front, but I refuse to compromise on my beer so just have less. I have a beer calorie calculator that gives me a rough idea of calories based on ABV and amount I’m having. It doesn’t factor “extras” like lactose and that but it’s a good guide.

Brewdog's Cocoa Psycho is one of my favourite beers, haven't seen it on anywhere recently though. That's maybe for the best considering its strength and tastiness though.

Yeah this one was nice tasting but was harsh going down your throat*. For me it's kind of the fun of it just trying different ones to see what I like and it's ok to have something that you might just have a taste of and try something else.

I have found that the fruity beers, white lagers and student stouts are my favourite. I like IPA but have to be in the mood.

*Going for the no context hat trick.

Do you really hate mainstream beer that much? For me it's a totally different thing as they taste so different that I don't mind having both.

I don’t hate it is such, it’s just boring.

I drink craft beers etc. for the experience they bring. I love the flavours and how they develop as they warm or as you drink them. I don’t drink them for the sake of it. Mainstream beer has none of that and so I find it pointless.

I’m not against macros IF they provided beer that was fun and exciting, but generally they don’t so I don’t tend to drink their stuff as it’s a waste of money when you are buying beer for the experience and the fun.

That harsh is the unbalanced bit, if it were a thicker feel that doesn’t happen. A harsh aftertaste means the beer was pushed to a higher ABV that I should have been with what flavours are in there. It’s the skill of a good brewer to find the week spot.

Too little alcohol and it will feel lacklustre and almost watery, too much and it has a horrid after tone.

Can't fathom how people like Cocoa Psycho. Doesn't taste like chocolate and it's so so bitter. Though it seems most people like bitterness in general. But hey, it got me strawberry floating destroyed so it did the job lmao

I get that it's not overly exciting but it is nice and refreshing, I would rather drink a Coors or whatever than a sugary soft drink.

Dark chocolate is bitter.

With high strength special type beers you need to be careful what you eat with the.pm, if you eat sweet things the bitterness will be harsh and you won’t get the proper flavour.

Yeah I guess having the high ABV gets a few people to try it out of curiosity.

Should have put this in the other part but do you like the more mainstream craft beers like Beavertown?

Hey aren’t bad, a couple of club type places in town do them so makes a good option.

They are in the category of I wouldn’t go out of my way to find their beers, however,I’m more than happy to drink it if it’s on tap where I am.

They are owned by a Heineken now and since the take over the quality has definitely started to drift I assume in the name of cost saving.

Same happened to Meantime, Camden, Dark Star and many many others.
