i didnt realise gin was such serious business

im going to do a Jawa and sit on the fence; i do understand personal choice so if Ad wants to mix his drinks with a flavoured gin i get it, he can
i also share still's opinion that i wouldnt be mixing soft drinks with a decent spirit - you may as well use a cheaper one (as long as it isnt awful) as the stronger flavours will probably mask it

as for drinking rum with coke :dread: may as well drink fizzy pop and be 14 again

I see gin criticism hasn't quite caught up with postmodernism yet

?

In 1967 the French literary critic Roland Barthes wrote "The Death of the Author", an essay arguing against the traditional literary critical practice of giving preference to the author's intent.

Or in other words, the intention of the distiller doesn't matter for how people decide to drink their gin ;)

Last post for tonight. Oh come on, Barthe’s work is entirely discredited nowadays. Adios.

The rum and Coke is very popular; Bacardi says that it is the world's second-most-popular alcoholic drink.[16] Its popularity derives from the ubiquity and low cost of the main ingredients, and the fact that it is very easy to make. As it can be made with any quantity or style of rum, it is simple to prepare and difficult to ruin.[17]

Drink critics often have a low opinion of the cocktail. Writer Wayne Curtis called it "a drink of inspired blandness",[6] while Jason Wilson of The Washington Post called it "a lazy person's drink".[16] Troy Patterson of Slate called it "the classic mediocre Caribbean-American highball", which "became a classic despite not being especially good".[18]

"Became a classic despite not being especially good" :slol:

It's definitely the lazy person's drink, I can't argue with that!

So you say it is a lazy person's drink because it is almost impossible to get wrong, but I was drinking rum and coke (read: pepsi) last night with a friend and we decided to play a game of chess. I was concentrating too much on my move (and had probably already drank too much) that when I poured myself a new drink I forgot to pour the mixer and took a swig of straight rum. Now I'm not saying I couldn't shot rum without throwing up, but my expectations were very much set on the drink being mixed and my body was not ready for what was, in my defence, definitely more than one shot :shifty:

So lazy you couldn't even be arsed to pour the mixer. Now that's commitment to the bit.

That was quite an entertaining read, catching up on last night's posts .

I do love a good gin. I'll always enjoy a couple of sips of it neat, but then usually mix with lemonade (or even ginger beer) so while I also think it's cretinous to mix a quality spirit and destroy the flavour, I do it myself :slol:.
