Euro 2020: Italy win it; morons, encouraged by UK govt., racially abuse England's greatest team since '66.

For everyone here who has no idea who this is, it's an F1 driver apparently...

It's ridiculous social media sites are allowed to take so little responsibility on this issue.

Twitter is a micro-blog, it makes lots of sense that someone might want to make an art account separate to their personal account to promote their art, or a GRcade account that represents the community and not a person, or for me to have a separate account linked up to my consoles for sharing screenshots, or a bot account set up for some fun gimmick like posting one line of a book every day. The "one account per person" model makes more sense for some traditional social media like LinkedIn where it's obvious an account = a real person but I don't think it makes sense for Twitter which is a blogging platform.

Absolutely ban racists though, and absolutely call out social media sites for a lack of moderation and responsibility!

When black players stop being abused because of the colour of their skin, perhaps then we can "take politics out of football".

Well said.

Agreed.

It's still a fair comment and not wrong that a gesture alone doesn't do much beyond being a first point of awareness of a cause for a wider audience to enable discussion around those issues. I think though it's clear just how important pushing that awareness has been for these players, and how the immediate backlash against them from certain fans, media outlets, and politicians has only made that gesture even more important for them. It really feels like it's only now, with widespread racist abuse being enacted and people not taking government hypocrisy laying down, that the discussion is beginning properly.

I guess you could say that we're making jokes about timepieces because a mildly famous man was robbed of his very expensive wrist-mounted clock.

"Who's to blame for racism?"

"Black people!"

Interesting strategy there.
