What is this xG crap? "Bigger square is higher shot value"? What does that even mean? I presume the pink ones are goals - why is the Italian one bigger than the English? They both scored so surely the "value" is equal? Italy had quite a few chances but they were either scrappy like the goal or very speculative.

It's the likelihood of scoring from that position based on previous data. What you factor in for that is a choice for analysis so I'm not sure from that map how the values are derived (you can calculate expected goals for an individual team or player and there are lots of potential variables more than just pitch position), but essentially if it's a small square that means those shots rarely lead to goals and vice versa. My brother has been training to get into sports data and from what he's told me it seems pretty interesting. You'd rather take 5 shots each with a 50% chance of going in than 10 shots each with a 10% chance.

Yeah, this, it's basically just a measure of the quality of a chance as a percentage. I used that tweet from that account because I figured the visual method is more useful than just posting the numbers, which can be skewed depending on the volume of chances etc.

I don't really know why everyone's saying Saka played badly to be honest, he seemed really busy when he came on and had to do quite a lot of defensive work rather than attacking. It's not like anyone was playing great for England in the second half as Italy came out much stronger. If anything Saka coming on coincided with England getting a bit more of a foothold in the second half.

He lost the ball a couple of times after coming on and looked off the pace. But then he was fine once he settled. No better or worse than anyone else really. People just jumped on him because of those early dispossessions and ignored everything else.

It didnt help that whenever it went well for him they immediately fouled him.

Speaking of Qatar are the games going to be climate controlled in a closed off stadium? If not I don't see how any of the teams are not going to be essentially dead on their feet.

Part of why this situation is so disgusting is that the former option is somehow one that exists and seems to allow people to continue to exist and often thrive.
