In all my shared houses at uni there was a map of either Liberty City, Vice City or San Andreas stuck to the wall near the telly. There was one included with RDR as well wasn't there? It's just nice to have it to hand without having to fanny around in menus. I might have to put one on my second monitor or on a tablet, because - especially in the early game - you have no idea where anything is.

I'm pretty sure GTAV comes with a map if you get it on disc

I love when games do that

Dipped my toe into GTA5 earlier - did that great mission where you're trailing the crashing plane as Franklin. As a showcase for how good the game can still look it was a fantastic one to be given. Drove around the city for a while just taking in the sites and listening to Britney.

Then popped online to see what's up. Walked over to the first online guy I see and he just pops me in the head straight away

Drove around for a while then see the guy who killed me sitting idly in a car so popped him right back. Then found him again and he was still idle so did it again. Then found him for a third time and he was still idle but as I was walking up to him the stopped being afk and killed me  :fp:

Still don't really "get" the online mode but I can tell there's a lot there if you are more patient than me.

(That's odd... I just typed out a post but it doesn't seem to have appeared here... I'll try again!)

Yeah, the disc version came with a map! I'm now all-digital on my PS4 but I sure do miss cases and manuals.

The true, correct way of playing GTA 8-) .

I kinda get the impression that Online is like that. Previous posts have suggested that players roam around in tanks, too  .

Yup, you can buy a tank and drive it round the city. Of course, you can try and steal one from the military base, but you won't get far with it before their jets blow you up.

Ugh, what the fudge is Rockstar Social Club and why do I need to sign up for it to play GTAV offline?! :fp:

I don't think you need Social Club, but Rockstar certainly encourage it. It gives some decent benefits too. The Elergy RH8 is a free car given to members and it's one of the best in the Sports class, though will benefit heavily from upgrading, which of course isn't free, and you'll need to win some races to unlock those upgrades.

It was great seeing DarkRula stream some San Andreas action this evening. Rula got into the fire engine business and that was pretty profitable. He managed to pop by a few clubs for some R&R, too  .

Thanks to all you folks that have played, watched and posted stuff during this event; it has been really cool seeing it all going on  .

I'm not gonna be around much tomorrow but I hope that you enjoy the final hours of this GTA weekender.

You gotta make a mark to move where you want to!

Well it's the first time I've played it so I'm not clued up on things but the dialog that came up basically said "You have to sign in to Social Club to play GTAV" :|

Social Club has always been a permanent fixture of the PC version. Before the update to the Rockstar Launcher, it the Social Club launcher that you'd see first, and you would not be able to get past it without first signing in or creating an account. I can't remember if going into airplane mode (or at least blocking an internet signal) would get you in without needingan account. It was pretty much their original way of trying to combat hackers when the game launched by tying the game to the account so if you were banned you'd have to rebuy the game.

I think. Not 100% on that, but since Online is accessed through Story Mode (technically), it would make sense.

In the end, I couldn't muster too much enthusiasm for the game. I go through stages like this, predominantly it is due to the in game currency. Being fined up to $30k when destroying another players personal vehicle is a big part of it. I like to sit close to zero to avoid these fines, but currently I am the richest I have ever been and haven't decided what to spend the money on.

I am sure I'll get back into it at some point, but ended up getting pulled to Horizon Zero Dawn this weekend. My money will likely be split between the new heist setup and the Arena setup and I'll keep popping on at least once a month to collect the generous login bonuses.

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.

I managed a few hours on GTA V once I got past the Social Club nonsense. It was a very odd feeling to be playing the franchise again after such a long break - the last time I touched a GTA game was well over a decade ago now!

A bunch of things were clearly much better than they were in GTA IV - the driving and shooting controls in particular seemed like a massive improvement and were much more enjoyable than they were in that last outing.

Overall though I don't think I'll be pumping much more time in to it, the series has just lost something for me over the years. GTA 3 and, to an extent, Vice City just had a certain level of lightness and charm to how they were put together which just seems to have evaporated in the games that came after.

I should have just gone back and played 3 again!

Thanks again, guys, for taking part in the event. It was cool to see so many people breaking the law over the weekend :toot: . The "play what you want, whenever you want" approach seemed to draw people in so it's something I'll consider again for future game events.

Seek knowledge was my main game
To figure out the the law, to figure out the frame
Just when I thought I knew justice
A cop behind me said "You've just been busted"

This sounds like a post on Parler.

Good idea for an event, it was a good impetus for me to actually install one of the Epic Games freebies that I haven't played yet! I will probably dip in and out of it. Not sure if I'm interested in the online part but you never know...

Oh yeah, and someone tried to carjack me last night so I pulled out my shotgun and shot them in the back when they were running away. I'm trying to trap the Daily Mail in an endless feedback loop.

 .

There will be a degree of structure around events; but with guidelines loose enough that people aren't put off.

I had to look it up and kinda wish I hadn't :o.

Hey, maybe we could have a follow-up GTA weekender next year. We'll see how it goes!

I plan to continue playing San Andreas until I complete it. It's gotten its claws into me again.

thanks jawa! i must admit im opposite to SEP - i was struck by how primitive SA feels. it didnt help that i was playing it on an LCD tv so the input lag was poor and the visuals muddy. i dont think ill play it again until i have my CRT set up again!

Despite mostly returning to Lego City Undercover to get screenshots to post as a joke I actually did enjoy replaying the first few levels of it and wouldn't have done otherwise, so I also think this event worked well even if I didn't actually play GTA
