Event: GRcade Theft Auto (Event complete!)

This is it! It's time for the GTA Weekender and it'll run from Friday 22 thru Sunday 24 January.

Everyone is welcome to join in and it's super-easy to do so!

1) Let jawa know what GTA games(s) you're gonna play...
2) ...and then play those games at some point over the three days (for as long or as short as you want!)...
3) ...and just post in this thread what you think of 'em!

Hey, why not post a few screenshots or clips if you feel like it, too? If you want to do a stream whilst playing, go for it!

I'll keep a log of who is playing and what they're playing in this opening post. Let's GTA!

As I said in the other thread I'll play a couple of hours of GTA V. Expect an expert critique of the first mission...

Ooh, actually: are there any quintessential graphics mods etc I should get or does it look pretty good in vanilla mode?

Thanks, guys - I've now updated the play log in the opening post - just shout if anything needs changing.

It's ace to see quite a few folk being up for this; hopefully numbers will further increase as we head towards the weekend :-).

I'm definitely going to play Chinatown Wars, but don't know what to play it on. Got it on DS (would be played on 3DS XL) and PSP (would be played on Vita). I feel like Vita is a bit more comfortable but not sure how important the touch screen elements were in the DS release.

It's really neat that you've chosen Chinatown Wars, Grin! I only played the game a wee bit on my DS but I do remember there being touchscreen elements with selecting weapons and - IIRC - searching stuff. I had forgotten that there was a PSP version; I'd assume that it's graphically slightly better.

I was excited that this was going to be GTA online. Either way my PS4 isn’t currently with me so I’m out

Oh! Ack, never mind, dude!

So is GTA Online part of GTAV? I might dip my toes into the online aspect if so but with this being my first go at GTAV in any form I think I might have my hands full with just the single player aspects!

Yeah, I've never tried out online mode - I've only played a bit of GTA V in single-player - but I think it gets pretty hectic! DarkRula has streamed some Online mode and I think he plays it mainly in single player, though; there is a way in which you can setup a room/server (or something) with just you in it - which enables you to do the races and stuff on your own.

GTA V Online on the Friday as part of my GRcade stream, then San Andreas on Saturday on my own. I've played three hours of San Andreas before, so it'll be fun to replay those missions once again.

Yes

You start off with nothing and have to grind out weapons so it's not an immediate online sandbox. Not to mention the million insanely expensive vehicles they have added over the years as a way of selling shark cards (the real world money to gta money "micro"transactions). So I'm not sure how accessible it would be to just try out for a single weekend. When I started it on release everyone was in the same situation and obviously none of the updates had added more content; I vividly remember buying the sawn-off shotgun and becoming a god amongst most people only using pistols. Now you're much more likely to just be surrounded by players with tanks and rocket launchers. Unless they've improved the new player experience that I wouldn't know about!

I think the online missions are for the most part rubbish, you spend most of your time sitting in a lobby or a loading screen just to play a 2 minute race or deathmatch that poorly replicates playing an actual game of that genre. The in-map methods of making money are way more fun like stealing and delivering expensive cars or collecting player bounties because they are emergent as part of the sandbox but as a new player amongst higher level players I imagine it's a much tougher experience.

Okay, sounds interesting but yeah not necessarily ideal way to get involved with this event!

I might give the online mode 5 minutes just to see if I get ambushed by a unit of tanks though! :lol:

I'd be up for trying GTA online with some peeps from here if anyone fancied it?

Edit: I'm assuming there's crossplay, but I'd be on a ps4

Easily the GTA game I enjoyed most. The whole drug market mechanic was so well done, I sank hours into that alone and barely touched the story. :lol:
