Yea, the murderer's defence had really eerily specific things in common with the story.

It's not a thread I've really wanted to pull at tbh.

Sounds like you need to team up with a sexy FBI agent to investigate the copycat murders of your books.

Knowing my luck it would turn out to be me all along.

It's pretty interesting though something you wrote being mirrored in real life, kind of reminds me of the Charlie Brooker Pig thing..

Unbelievably the video of me and my misses just hit 1 Million views, it was only put up Monday around 3, so it's crazy.. went in a shop yesterday and one of the guys serving in there came up to us and said "wow it's you guys off TikTok" it then led to us getting a discount on some animal crossing and Zelda badges.

Must feel like this at the moment:

You should make a "we went viral" video on it or something to try to get some traffic to your videos while people are looking.

Yeah that's a good idea making a "we went viral video". Getting such a high view count has unlocked the ability for her account to go live on TikTok which is something I never thought would happen to either of our accounts.

I worked for an tiny agency that deep dived on this stuff (i.e. did most of the research).

The rules are pretty basic but they aren't really rules. I don't want to sound like we all exist just to turn out "content" for social media to monopolise and monetise but, that's pretty much it... If you have an idea just do it and who knows it might lead to something, it might not. How else do people build a platform (if that's what you want. Of course, you might NOT want that which is the other end of the whole thing). Everyone posting online in their multiplicity together have a platform whether they get 10 views or 10 million. There are lots of people who consistently turn out shite and hope something at some point sticks, but the truth is "winning the algorithm" is as good as random and it's one chaotic sequence of events after another. Nobody can predict or orchestrate that, sorry it's just not possible.

You can end up with an audience you don't even want, so I guess doing it deliberately has a purpose, but I bet there are plenty of "influencers" who springboard off of other things.

While "viral content" get's a lot of crap online it is largely people just trying to have fun, enjoy life and do something deliberate with their time here. People can be as cynical as they like but add someone's personality and a purpose and what they are doing is often more genuine than it looks. The point is they choose to do it rather than complaining about it or laughing at it, you have to be pretty brave too so kudos for that. Most of it is people reacting emotionally looking for their dopamine hit on what is an addictive system, then arguing about stupid gooseberry fool in the comments, which just drives more engagement, which surfaces content bubbling up the feed etc. etc. Social media wins because they get paid for ads whereas you get a number (and maybe a lot of stress, maybe some opportunities). It's a flash in the pan type thing. Doing that repeatedly is both difficult and maybe not always the right way to go about it. Neither is it healthy, unless, again, it's your job. But I won't slight anyone for making "doing social media" their job, as long as they enjoy it and understand its limitations and have the right head for it. Can also strawberry float you up.

I got randomly stopped by the seaside the other day for someone to try a joke on me for tiktok, I misheard a word and so didn't get it... I felt awful, as if I had let them down, because a few minutes later I got the joke . We can all think or feel whatever we think or feel about the social media monster, that's the point, it basically is just billions of people messing about on the Internet and some people get better at it. Have fun and don't stress about it too much.

Thanks Gecko, your bright and your feedback is appreciated. It's my misses account that's kinda got big from this even though I'm on a lot of it, so we are seeing if we can kind of pull mine up a bit and if that works I'll try and pull other people up, mention places I am on like here etc...

Yeah I wasn't sure if I was sounding nihilistic there, but when people see something "go viral", I think it's nice, and I find it tends to create a conversation around, "how do we replicate this success?" or "How did this happen?"

I'm not saying this is you Kerr, or your misses, or anyone in fact, but in our culture where people want a break and "get famous" (I can't imagine anything worse honestly ) I think it's worth taking a moment to remember it's quite a remarkable thing in and of itself, and how we're all part of one big dance with social media perhaps having more influence over that than it ought to, or maybe that's a great thing, it depends I suppose.
Not sure why I'm being wistful about it, but when I see things go viral I often wonder, "hmm so what about all of those occasions I've had a fun idea or a silly dance or song or joke or whatever it is - and I do quite a lot of art things - did I immediately shoot it down or get distracted or something?" And what's the difference between that and somebody who has a large following online... I just find it interesting, not sure if I have a point to make about it!

I do believe that it is as you said Gecko, it really does seem to be a completely random thing.

You can throw everything including the kitchen sink at a youtube channel without success, only for some quickie random vid to then explode in popularity for no apparent reason.

I refused to engage with A&E, I didn't want to waste NHS resources.

I won't lie, it was pretty bad, but Over time I got used to it.

The mother of one of my best friends in college worked in A&E and she would tell us all kinds of crazy tales about people who came in, my favourite was a woman who got a dinosaur TRex toy stuck half way into her lady garden.... If that had been someone I worked with and I found out I'd hum Jurassic Park every time they came near me ;)

How many views now, Kerr? (Haven’t got TikTok installed so can’t see.)
