I put a stone on over the last year at Uni, so I decided to restrict my calorie intake. Over the last sort of five weeks or so I've lost that stone again.

I didn't do any exercise because I don't find it enjoyable and it evidently wasn't necessary for what I wanted to achieve. It's something I'll get into when I'm 50 and I fear death, and not a moment before. ;)

An easier way of losing weight is being vegetarian. Eat fruit instead of cakes and biscuits.

Don't do sport- you'll just end up hurting yourself. "Sport ist mord" as they say in Deutschland.

I must say if I were moving back to Lancashire I'd probably lose ten pounds out of sheer terror. :dread:

In all seriousness, the hardest part of getting fit and losing weight for me is the eating right. When I'm in the zone I exercise just fine and am pretty fit for a tubber. Snacking during work is just too tempting. That said, I'm moving back to part time hours soon so that won't be an issue anymore. What are the normal types of foods that people eat to keep themselves fit? Looking for recipes for things I can take to work evening shifts with me or for long hours in the library during the day.

Yoga is a very good option if you want low/no impact exercise that gets you into the fat burning zone.

I recommend DDP Yoga.

Riddle me this. When my mam came to visit, I took the week off work. During that week, we went out and had fish and chips, all you can eat chinese, takeaways, the lot. Somehow, I managed to lose weight that week.

Last week, I worked every day, walking there and back. I ate a much healthier diet, with lean meat and plenty of fruit and veg. I weighed myself today, and I have gained weight.

Exactly, which is why I can't understand these fat strawberry floats on TV who swear they don't know why their bodies are somehow summoning up biomass out of nothing, by the kilo, every week.

I'm not losing weight because I fear death (I still smoke, after all, so where's the sense in that?). What kicked this all off for me was looking back through photo albums and seeing the younger self a lot slimmer (not necessarily fitter) and wondering if perhaps all the Ben & Jerrys might not be such a good idea, after all? I missed the old me and I resented the fatter me I'd become - because I was eating gooseberry fool (and I knew it).

I won't pretend for a moment that I don't miss chip butties, chocolate, fresh white bread, takeaways and all the rest - I just sort of know that now (given my age - I ain't no spring chicken) I have to be sensible enough to knock that silliness on the head and perhaps in doing so I can find my way back to a size I can feel a little more self-confident about. To me, it's a project. I'll see where it leads me - but I know there are ups and downs along the way.

Braz says to watch out for 'the plateau'. I'm ready. I know it's probably coming. When I first started the diet I was losing weight fast, then for about a fortnight things slowed down and now they seem to have picked up again. Diets, eh? Up and down like the Assyrian Empire.

I wake up every morning and skip to the scales, half-expecting to see I've magically lost another half a stone overnight. :fp: But so far this diet has been a great experience - proof to me that even at my age I can still easily lose the weight. I find that fascinating.

I'd quite easily lose weight if I stopped eating and drinking shite but I think doing it alongside exercise is better as not being overweight =/= fit and healthy.

There's no denying that certain genetic quirks can make it more or less difficult for some to change weight, but most medical evidence that I saw suggests it realistically amounts to nothing more than a minor predisposition. The people on those shows are full of gooseberry fool, amongst other things.

I also didn't mean to imply that I disagreed with Cal's opening post. The two ways to lose weight are to either cut energy in with a diet or raise energy out with exercise. But neither diet nor exercise will result in any weight loss if it doesn't result in a net energy deficiency for the body (which in Cal's case it wouldn't because the extra exercise stimulated his appetite and made him eat more, defeating the entire purpose of the.... um.. exercise).

Weight loss needs a net negative intake of energy. Cal got this with dieting, some get it through exercise, and most a combination of both.

The extra exercise doesn't make you eat more, your lack of willpower does.

No, but the extra exercise does stimulate the appetite, making you want to eat more than you possibly would have otherwise.

Well that is a thing.

Be careful with the whole "less calories means losing fat". As your body adapts to the lower intake, it can start storing more of it as fat because may have to go long times without much food.

People worrying about 'fat burning zones' and gooseberry fool when they are trying to lose weight is ludicrous.
