Thanks - there's an argument to be made that your employers have a duty of care under Health & Safety at Work Act (1974) so if it's something you wanted to pursue with your employer you do have a leg to stand on ;)

One of the guys at work had a sit stand desk, they are so impractical it is ridiculous he ended up just sitting because he was able to do gooseberry fool all when he was standing.

I work in an office on computers all day. I get up an about for a few minutes at a time for breaks or if I need to go to the datacentres, but 15-20 minutes an hour out of my day to get moving is not applicable to a working life where people also expect me to deliver things.

You can get arms to mount you screens keyboard and mouse etc. And you raise it up to stand for a but them lower to sit. Ergotron make some great ones.

In theory it's a great idea in practise it just doesn't work.

Want to be fit? Exercise

Don't want to be fat? Cut out sugar

Are those statistics true? I do 8-12 hour shift with an hour and a bit commute either side. Get loss of time off but even walking the dog twice a day, exercising, gardening, cleaning, etc I doubt I'm active for more than 3 hours a day.

For the most part, yes. I can get away with eating KFC and the odd curry, but whenever it's Xmas and there's lots of sweets/cake I start to notice a bit of pudge growing around my waist.

As long as I don't eat junk like that I can maintain a 30" waist.

I still have the odd jog on the treadmill at the gym and lift weights, but haven't played sports for a year now.

Sugar is the real mummy strawberry floater when it comes to unwanted weight gain.

Sugar's evil and I'm surprised governments don't treat it the same as smoking.

It's things like ice cream which have the combination of sugar and fats which are the real strawberry floater.

30" waist is pretty small.

I thought you were saying that it's inactivity that causes those diseases rather than diet?

Oh I am - my comment about ice cream was just in reference to the two posts above about putting on weight.

I'm pretty sure smoking doesn't kill you if you don't get enough of it.

Bloody hell, so the easiest way of maintaining a good diet is just cut out refined sugar. Generally i don't have any sugar in my coffee or tea, but do have some fruits at times. Cereals are packed full of them aren't they? Why doesnmt sugar have a calorie value usually?

So we've established that the key to weight loss is to expend more than you eat?

My diet consists mainly of proteins and carbs and I'm in pretty good shape. I know it'd go to gooseberry fool very soon if I started eating things like cakes and fizzy drinks.

Worth noting I hardly ever drink alcohol, beer's full of sugar, hence the term 'beer belly'.

I do feel better since i gave up fizzy drinks - mainly diet coke. I'm guessing that is bad too right?
