for I am old and withered

Monkey Man posted this tweet in the PS5 thread

twitter.com/PlayStation/status/1420370815036633088

and some of the replies have me puzzling. I understand the concept of "the ratio" on Twitter - the ratio of replies versus likes and retweets shows whether it was well received - and I assume when someone replies with just the word "ratio" it's a deliberate attempt to dislike the tweet. Is that also what is happening when people reply with just "."?

There are also replies of just "W" and "L". I'm guessing that's shorthand for win/lose, is the context just W approving of a tweet and L disapproving, or is there some relation to the ratio and deliberately posting to affect the ratio?

This is a dumb thread but I tried searching this and couldn't find any explanation beyond explaining the concept of the ratio (probably because the characters "W", "L" and "." are not very searchable), and now I need to know.

I think ratio posts are to exemplify that it is specifically for the ratio. Like some posts on forums with post rules will just have "No/word count" without expansion. So it's more active than just "." and nothing more.

Or to just try and gain more traction than the parent post for that sweet clout.

But I dunno, I don't interact with twitter outside of using the feed for cute art.

I've been on Twitter for 12 years, and I've never seen these things.

Do you enjoy self loathing, and having your brain's endorphin mechanisms broken? Then you'll love twitter dot com.

I have no idea what the L or W thing means, but to me Twitter is what you make it.

I've muted all the gooseberry fool I don't want to see, and only follow things I do. Anything that's an advert gets muted, anyone spouting hateful gooseberry fool anywhere I see it gets reported and banned.

As a consequence, I've got a nice little gaming stream of nice things to read, and get to interact directly with musicians from my favourite bands.

I have no idea what some of the comments are meant to be saying, the comment section of nearly any semi popular tweet is normally an absolute state :dread:

I mainly only go on Twitter to follow F1/motorsport and gaming news, most of the time it’s not even worth commenting even if you have something to add to the conversation.

This.

All the people who think it's nothing but hate must be following some horrific people. It's very easy to avoid horrible people if you avoid following them and don't seek it out.

I've no idea what "W" or "L" mean. Some gamer culture bullshit rather than general Twitter bullshit?

Been saying this for years. It's Twitter's greatest strength. You can tailor it to be exactly what you want. If someone chooses not to do that... that's weird, and it's on their own shoulders.

If you had an open sewer running along the bottom of your garden, that wouldn't be very nice, and you'd be constantly aware that it was there. But you wouldn't go and dive in every morning, then complain that it's disgusting.

There's a lot of wonderful things to have been born of the internet. Twitter isn't one of them.
