Police aren't friends of protest action, what the strawberry float are they doing? :dread:

I'm so conflicted.

Police are joining the cause

The police exist to enforce private property rights, and private property rights lead directly to the exploitation and destruction of natural resources. The police will protect corporations who destroy and pollute the planet, over the people who try to stop them, every time. The men in that video are not repentant about their past careers, and I doubt they'd ever admit that their former job is a direct protector of the entities who cause the climate crisis. Will those three be working to provide counter intelligence and root out police moles? Would they actively sabotage police work that was working against XR?

It's no wonder other groups are wary of Extinction Rebellion when this is their attitude to the police, and it does make you question just how radical the reforms they're after are.

Yes I imagine they would help find any moles. For anyone else reading this thinking what are they talking about, very recently there was a case about Police officers having infiltrated protest groups (I can’t remember the cause) and some had even got in to relationships and had children with members of the movement and left the families after they stopped being investigated. You should be able to find it by searching “Lush police”. So this is t some weird conspiracy theory thing, it has happened and is probably happening now

It’s a difficult one.

I absolutely believe climate change is real and that we need to urgently take action.

But I also know that pissing people off may well turn them against the cause.

But I look at people on the anti XR side, the likes of Piers Morgan and Julia Hartley-Brewer, and I think XR have it right.

For decades the protests have been ignored due to them not being disruptive. Disruption gets headlines, headlines keep the issue alive and that’s probably the only way things will change.

Although I am not confident anything will change. Big money doesn’t care and big money rules the world.

What I'm getting at is let's say BoJo bans the use of plastic cups tomorrow and gives a load of figures that this is the equivalent to heating X number of houses per year. Is this enough for now to satisfy the protesters? How stringently would the alternatives be vetted to be sure that they are in fact an environmentally responsible solution?

The government isn't going to stop people flying, driving or eating meat so I believe it would be beneficial for XR to have a clear, achievable goal for governments and businesses and do what they can to influence people's habits.

The first XR was to raise awareness

The ones in early summer was to get the government/political parties to declare it a national emergency

The aim of this one (and the following ones until it happens) is for a credible plan to be put in place to bring emissions to 0% or lower by 2030. Banning plastic cups would not satisfy that requirement. Basically a green new deal needs to be started.

The logo, made of clothes, was laid on the Alton Barnes horse in Wiltshire, which had been recently re-chalked by school children.

Rob Sutherland, who led July's re-chalking, said the community has been "absolutely devastated".

He said children were "disappointed and upset" and "couldn't understand how adults could have done this".

Kids were upset by clothes being placed on it?

Stop building coal and gas power plants, invest heavily in renewable energy, heavily subsidise home solar panels and electric vehicles and actually recycle waste in the UK instead of shipping it to India and China to name just a few ideas.

World governments are prepared to spend trillions on military budgets yet seem unwilling to spend anything but the bare minimum on tackling climate change.

Not meaning to be a dick but the UK isn't building coal power stations and gas power stations are essential at the moment. Obviously there could always be more done but renewable energy is an area that is already being heavily invested in so I would highly doubt that would satisfy XR. The solar panels and electric vehicles are interesting as if you break down the construction and long term disposal of them there are massive environmental issues.

Again, not meaning to be a dick but I'm not sure those are things that would satisfy XR as they're so easy to dismiss and very long term solutions that would take a lot of time to progress.

I don't think there is a quick solution to climate change, I'm also aware that solar panels and electric vehicles aren't the 'silver bullet' they're made out to be but people need electricity and most people need some kind of vehicle and both would reduce CO2 emissions in the short term if they were more affordable.

The long term solution would probably require finding a means of generating energy via nuclear fusion and also banning all privately owned vehicles in favour of cheap carbon neutral public transport , people would also need to stop eating meat and fish as both industries cause environmental damage.

I can't see any of that happening by 2030.

I think we are doubting that school kids are actually upset.

It’s clothes on an outside landmark. Nothings been destroyed.

If they are upset by clothes on a horse, just imagine how upset they will be when their parents sell the family home to aqua man due to rising sea levels!

strawberry float that with the faux outrage, you don't give a strawberry float about the school kids; the same way they don't give a strawberry float about clothes being placed on a chalk horse

Good posts in here Hime, it's interesting reading your perspective since from what I remember you work in the energy industry.

Saying that, blowing up Nelson's column would simultaneously blow up the forehead veins of every gammon boomer, so it could be a good move actually.

God says he is not sorry for making it snow on a chalk horse.

The snow, made of frozen water, fell on the Alton Barnes horse in Wiltshire, which had been recently re-chalked by school children.

Rob Sutherland, who led July's re-chalking, said the community has been "absolutely devastated".

He said children were "disappointed and upset" and "couldn't understand how the weather could have done this".

God, from the Kingdom of Heaven, said the snow, which fell on Sunday morning, had been done to highlight "that it is quite cold at this time of year".

He said the work local people and children had done re-chalking it, "was a fantastic job".

"The last thing I wanted to do was to damage it. I was very careful of how the snow fell on it.

"I'm sorry that it's upset people... but I make no apologies about upsetting people, I did my utmost not to damage the horse," he added.

The snow was removed when it melted on Monday morning.

Mr Sutherland added: "I've had lots of people contact me in the past 24 hours. I've had to explain to children this morning - they can't understand how the weather has done this.

"The weather has defaced something they'd spent their time and effort doing and they're absolutely disgusted.

"They're disappointed, they're upset, all of the anger's there.

"Most importantly it's just put them off religion itself.

"You encourage children to do the right thing, you do positive actions and this just hasn't happened. It's completely the opposite."

The monument was restored over the summer with a RAF Chinook helicopter used to transport more than 40 tonnes of chalk up the hill.

The first attempt was hampered by high winds and driving rain, but the job was eventually finished in August when Year 6 pupils and their parents completed the facelift.

The history of this horse is quite fun. In 2003 it grew an extra appendage. It's been turned into a zebra on April Fools Day before. This "outrage" over a logo made of clothes that got removed and caused no lasting damage is just silly - and seems a little suspect that it's more people set against the movement than their actions.
