A CGI trailer confirming that Playground Games, makers of Forza Horizon are working on the next installment of Fable was shown today at the Xbox On event.

From the looks of it they've gone back to a proper fantasy setting. The trailer did feature some humour so it sounds like the tongue-in-cheek RPG style is being kept.

Was Fable 3 not proper fantasy? I never played that one.

I can't remember if Fable 2 had them, but Fable 3 had guns.

I remember Fable 2 had Master Chief's helmet and an energy sword preorder bonus.

Was it Fable 2 that was accidentally free for a bit on the Xbox 360?

Fable (Xbox Game Studios – Playground Games). A new beginning for the legendary franchise. Explore a land of fantastical creatures and wondrous places. Developed by Playground Games for Xbox Series X, and Windows 10 and coming to Xbox Game Pass.

An ex-Eurogamer lad made a decent video interview retrospective with Peter Molyneux who expressed regret at moving the technology forward in the sequels!

Be interesting to see what direction they take with this. Will it be a fairly standard fantasy action RPG with familiar Fable styling and locations or will they actually try and drill down into some of the things that the original games tried (and stumbled) to achieve - world persistence and growth, genuine relationships with characters around you, reputations and character traits having a meaningful impact on the player, NPC's and world over time etc.

Is there some research on numbered sequels impacting sales?

Growing trend to reuse titles.

Always in for more Fable.

Except for Fable: The Journey. Because, y'know, Kinect.

Rumours are that this will be some form of MMO-lite/Live Service game

I actually found the persistence better than I remember in a recent playthrough of 2. After getting back from the Spire I decided to hang up my sword and live out my days as a woodcutter in Oakfields. I'd say goodbye to the kids every morning and then go chop some wood all day whilst buying some food for tea on the way home. I managed to befriend most of the villagers like a medieval Animal Crossing.

Then I got greedy doing the clock skip to earn a load of money. My wife and kids ended up leaving me because id been away for so long so I took back my sword and went back to adventuring.

(It’s not fable 4, just fable)

Fable has skipped an entire gen to find itself on Series X.
