Will it be a fairly standard fantasy action RPG with familiar Fable styling and locations or will they actually try and drill down into some of the things that the original games tried (and stumbled) to achieve - world persistence and growth, genuine relationships with characters around you, reputations and character traits having a meaningful impact on the player, NPC's and world over time etc.

Don't forget the hand holding

I actually found the persistence better than I remember in a recent playthrough of 2. After getting back from the Spire I decided to hang up my sword and live out my days as a woodcutter in Oakfields. I'd say goodbye to the kids every morning and then go chop some wood all day whilst buying some food for tea on the way home. I managed to befriend most of the villagers like a medieval Animal Crossing.

Then I got greedy doing the clock skip to earn a load of money. My wife and kids ended up leaving me because id been away for so long so I took back my sword and went back to adventuring.

Rumours that surfaced a few years ago stated you can completely ignore the main quest and just play the game as a normal townsperson. The game was supposed to let you build up and manage your own township too. No idea how you'd 'win' or finish the game like this, but I'd love it if this were true.

The same rumours also stated you could 'fail' the main quest as a narrative option, meaning it wouldn't simply be a game over but a valid way to experience the game. This ties in with the trailer's "not all stories have a happy ending" motto.

EDIT:

Wuh-oh

Rumours suggest that the new Fable game revealed during yesterday’s Xbox event could be an MMO as opposed to the long-awaited Fable 4.

I'm hoping it's SP only, because it's been too long.

Yeah I’m definitely hoping it’s single player, not every game needs a multiplayer mode.

Easier to put microtransactions into multiplayer games

After all the leaks and build-up I was so happy to see Fable but Microsoft was silly to end its conference with a teaser trailer. The game is surely deep in development so showing footage or a gameplay trailer and this would have ended on a huge high. Perhaps it was held back for the second show in August.

After the misfire of multiplayer Fable Legends I was sure this would be a single player so was disappointed to read the news that this could be an MMO, but it seemed to make sense as Phil Spencer's focus for Xbox games has traditionally been for them to be GaaS. But it might not be as bad as it sounds. I saw a tweet (it may have been Daniel Ahmad but I cant find it but will come back here to post... ) that downplays it is a full MMO.

I remember playing Fable II with an old GRcader who joined my game to help me run around and fight and stuff. The Elder Scrolls: Blades mobile game is set to feature the ability to visit friends' games. Speculating, maybe you can cooperate and fight together or fight others in an arena. And thank God there already is an Elder Scrolls MMO otherwise I would worry that TESVI would become one, but I am sure it too will have a similar feature. Microsoft, like with Halo Infinite, could keep players engaged in a single player game with yearly content drops.

A megaton would be if this drops before Christmas.

I can't see this being released this year. Next Christmas would be my guess.

I'd say Christmas 2022, the studio only opened from scratch a few years ago.

That's good in one way, I won't have to listen to him hype his game up to the point of insanity.

Molyneux is a man whose dreams and ideas far outweigh his talents.

I'd like to.imagine it might be closer to Forza Horizon than we think in that you can 'share' the map with up to 9 other players or just play offline. The online features in FH4, particularly the party games are really good fun.

There is no reason why Fable 4 couldn't have some fun multiplayer additions rather than just the usual raid nonsense. It would fit quite well with the game theme too.

Imagine being able to invite a few friends heroes into your own personal world and then go play a load of pub games togerher.

Maybe pub games as a side thing but I want Fable to be single player entirely. We’ve been dying for a proper single player exclusive for so long. Avowed and this look like they are going to fix this but I reckon we at least 2 years away.

Xbox head of studios Matt Booty spoke to the Guardian about the just-announced Fable game melding the old with the new. But perhaps he could have used a better example for his analogy...

“With any kind of franchise like that, where you’ve had existing versions, there’s always that balance between what you’re going to bring forward, what still stands up, and what you want to add that’s new. It’s like the challenge of making a new Star Wars movie – there’s stuff that everyone wants you to bring along, but then you’ve got a responsibility to take that to new places and I trust Playground has a good vision for that.”

This naming upsets me greatly

I mean they did the same with God of War, and Tomb Raider.
