New vegas is much better in my opinion simply because the writers actually gave some thought to how the world operates. Yes the map is a little flat and open so exploring isn’t as immediately gratifying but the missions, faction system and feeling of being in a real world political situation makes it more believable.

Fallout 4 has a cafe that operates 200 years after the bombs dropped and still has a skeleton in the corner…

Don’t get me wrong new Vegas has some of this but generally the locations at least feel lived in.

The desolation worked better in F3 since it was a less populated map in general and epicentre of some heavy bombing. It felt more “lone explorer”.

So I'm kind of a Bethesda era fan. Came into the series with Fallout 3, finished it and the DLC, but I didn't rate it that highly. Half finished New Vegas, again didn't like it that much, probably liked it less than Fallout 3 back in the day. Fallout 4 I loved and got obsessed with.

So after the amazing TV series I decided I HAD to finally finish New Vegas. I'm going through it and generally enjoying it a lot. I definitely didn't have the patience back on release. It is SLOW without sprinting. It takes ages to get anywhere! Modern games have spoilt me in that respect. But I can really see why people prefer Obsidian Fallout rather than Bethesda. The story is really nailed down and bad decisions really feel like bad decisions. In Fallout 4 the only decision is the final decision really, and it's much easier to choose what to do.

But I still have to praise Fallout 4. There is just so much more action going on, and although the main story was weak (it's Bethesda, what do you expect), the side quest stories in Fallout 4 was where the gold was in my opinion.

But then, the side quests and factions in New Vegas are a step above. Whilst the action is lacking, I'm really absorbed in finding out a about the factions and lore. Fallout 4 in retrospect felt quite weak in that area. But it's fascinating to see how far they pushed that engine. Christ knows how Starfield became so generic and boring.

But then Obsidian did The Outer Worlds and whilst I finished it, that world also felt a bit flat. Anyway, The House Always Wins.

I think the reason I think fallout 4 is my least favourite is that they pivoted away from RPG toward being an action exploration game. In New Vegas there really are multiple ways to play out some missions but I found in F4 almost every mission ended in combat and you had no real control over outcomes and consequences. It’s definitely the more polished game and has some truly great locations but does nothing interesting with them. New Vegas has such a rich world full of people and lives and things going on around you. I always felt it was a more “real” or “lived in” world. Though replaying it now I can see it still does what F4 did. You have the NCR headquarters and the office is full of junk, broken items and run down feel. Surely it wouldnt take long to clear away the debris BEFORE using it as an office. It’s clear the game / world was built from existing assets. And given the speed of development NV is a god damn masterpiece.

...and Fallout 76 is the eighth bestseller :toot: . Pretty amazing since it has been free-to-play for the past week!

That's wild. Cool to see New Vegas in the top 10 as well.

Started my own NV game yesterday as well actually. Already had my first crash.
Need to get some of the mods installed to help stabilise it and fix some of the bugs but I'm looking forward to dipping into it more.
I remember playing a decent chunk of it back when it released but I remember next to nothing about it beyond Primm. I don't think I ever even made it to the strip first time around.

It really is an excellent game. Will look like gooseberry fool now though so get some mild mods in there to sort some stuff out but keep the original few to it. I played it on the ps3 back in the day and it would hard crash quite regularly. I've still got my hard backed massive players guide my father in law got me back then. I didn't use it until I'd finished the main quest, but it's quite incredible how many branching things there are going on.

I plan on jumping between my Steam Deck and main PC so I'm not going to go too overboard with the mods. Mostly just to stabilise it a bit and add a couple of QoL features (I desperately want a better inventory system). It actually looks nice enough on Deck. Not stunning, but solid and it runs really nicely. I need to look into getting mods on Steam Deck. It's possible, but fiddly. :D
We'll see how I get on with it.

I'm playing NV on my series X with FPS boost. A few glitches and some crashes, but nothing too awful in the first 17 hours or so.

It's a great game isn't it? The amount of dialogue that changes with decisions you have made or interactions you have or not had is kind of staggering.

The only downer for me is navigating some areas to find quest markers. Sometimes it becomes a bit of a mess.

You might already know this, but in addition to the update for current-gen consoles, the game is due to become Steam Deck verified. Not sure what difference that makes. Presumably they've done some optimisation.

Nexus Mods is almost unusable due to how much traffic it's getting due to so many people grabbing mods because of the TV show

I'm trying out Vortex for a bit. I've gone through the process of modding Skyrim in the past and it was such a nightmare.

So far with Vortex, modding Fallout 4 has been a dream in comparison. I'll try to play through FO4 and maybe Skyrim again before next getting billed, but a fiver a month isn't too bad.

Once you've downloaded the mods you don't need to keep the subscription to Nexus to keep using them. The subscription just let's you download faster and auto-download the mods in a collection through Vortex rather than triggering each individual download manually.
You can use Nexus Mods without a subscription at all, it just takes a bit longer to download big mods.
