Orange knows!

I love Fallout 3 and NV... and I love 76. It's hard to rank 76 alongside them as - although they share similar mechanisms - they're different approaches to a Fallout game; rather like 1 and 2 are different.

Fallout 3 is one of my fave single-player games of all-time and 76 is one of my fave multiplayer online games.

Yeah, I wish that there was a cross-save capability but I doubt it'll happen due to the in-game purchases and currencies aspect.

I agree with Victor and Photek's points but I would add that the game is totally online (you can't play offline) and it is kinda focused on multiplayer even though you can choose not to interact. It's very much a multiplayer game at heart.

I choose to pay a monthly sub to Fallout 1st and one of the features of this is that you can play alone on your own server. This is very useful for people who spend a lot of time creating camps as then you are not disturbed by others whilst building!

Generally most other players are friendly. I'd say 80% friendly, 15% ignore you and 5% are complete asses. This breakdown may change now as many more new players are trying the game out, though!

Fallout 76 can be enjoyed completely on your own for the most part. I played the bulk of the main campaign in co-op with PEDZ but spent equal time on my own doing side quests and just exploring. In fact most main quest locations it warns you that only the party leader will make any progress so you are actually better served entering alone.

There are larger scale events that happen around the map that are multiplayer only but you'll usually find enough people already involved that it's never an issue.

By default PVP is turned off IIRC and if you want to fight other players you need to enable it. I've only ever enabled PVP a couple of times when other players were annoying me and I felt they needed shooting.

For sure, aspects like "are you looking for a good game?" will definitely impact Fallout rankings! ;)

I judge the series on 'Does the first friendly NPC you meet's head spin round like Reagan from The Exorcist?'

That's a good point worth mentioning! PVP is turned on by default and I'd recommend going straight into the options and setting "Pacifist" to "Yes". Jerks will hassle you/try and kill you/steal your stuff if they can. The game is not really geared up for PVP and is way more PVE. With Pacifist on, their bullets will barely damage you and they will go elsewhere once they realise that you are not reacting. As long as you don't fire back at them (in which case PVP is engaged) you'll be okay.

I'll see if I'm still wanting to try it once I get to the end of New Vegas then and maybe give it a go if I'm still in the mood.

New Vegas is so wild to me. I decided to talk to Rex the dog just for the hell of it yesterday, and he told me that little Jimmy had fallen down a well (which has now been marked on the map). That sort of uncertainty of what can happen means all the mechanics are staying interesting. There were 2 other things I could have inferred from his barking - would they have unlocked different quests? I don't know and I don't want to know, that would ruin the magic.

Unbelievably dense game. It's far more like Disco Elysium in terms of agency than I ever anticipated. And anybody who follows my wild ramblings will know how I feel about Disco Elysium.

A visual comparison of how dense each of F3 and FNV are.

For me an absolute must when playing New Vegas is taking the Wild Wasteland perk

I think there’s a mod that just makes that one of the options you choose when starting a new game so you don’t need to assign a trait point to it.

I took that but I've only had one weird thing happen so far. Which was just finding a special hat inside a fridge.

If memory serves you can miss a lot of it by not having the radio on. I would frequently see the icon appear for Wild Wasteland events happening but nothing was untoward so I assumed it was just borked. Apparently I was missing weird messages on the radio.

Thanks for the heads-up, MM!

Looks like I won't be trying it out until Friday, then.

The PS5 version is up for download!

It's a bit confusing as to what to download from the Store, though. I've checked my download listing and it's the PS5 version of the game but the add-ons are saying PS4 versions :dread: .

Oh well, I'm out now so I'll leave it and see what has downloaded later tonight!
