OK, we've talked about the endings of games, but not everyone gets to see those (me especially, as I have the attention span of a kid on a sugar rush). What everyone does see, however, is the intro. The intro sets the scene and tone of the rest of the game to follow, and gives that valuable first impression which, as we all know, lasts.

For me, I have to commend Super Mario 64. It may well be rose tinted spectacles, but seeing Lakitu swoop and dive under the bridge into the castle like that was something I could not have imagined seeing in a game until that point. It was on a par with the first camera pan over Hyrule Field in Ocarina Of Time for the title of biggest OMG YES moment.

Kingdom Hearts 2. Sweet Jesus, that video. The same applies to FFVIII, and to a lesser extent VII. VI has an amazing intro too!

For games that aren't made by Square-Enix, the opening section in Bioshock is fantastic - ruined a bit by first playing it in the demo, but still... a nice welcome into Rapture.

The whole intro sequence to Metal Gear Solid. The music, the first foray into stealthing, FINALLY getting in that lift and having the game title appear on screen when snake has changed into his proper costume

Legacy of Kain was pretty dapper.

Edit: I mean't Soul Reaver!

The CG intro to Quake II will always and forever be my favourite. The look and feel of it is epic, witnessing from space the last second preparations of the first wave of Earth's fighting forces over the alien homeworld before they shoot into the atmosphere and into the waiting arms of the enemy. The speed, the music, the whoops and hollers of the excited troops followed shortly thereafter by their dismayed cries, the panicked orders coming through, your own character trying to navigate his drop pod to the designated LZ, all while you watch the alien terrain and constructs pass beneath from his pod's perspective...

I love it to bits and nothing will ever top it for me.

IMHO when it comes to this stuff, there's a reason why giving the Halo series as an answer is a cliche - they've always got all the cinematic stuff, and the music, and the general ambiance so right.

I would also say that any Star Wars game, no matter how piss poor, has a massive head start if it uses the opening bars of the original Star Wars movies. For a certain generation, that opening orchestral salvo is still pant-wettingly exciting even after all these years.

Broken Sword 1. It's like the opening to Lewis. Well, Morse.

Technically a little dated, but still sheer class.

The way it teases things that will happen in a TV-like manner is sheer genius.

It's a tragedy that they replaced it for the PSX and DS versions with a much more pedestrian anime-intro. Strange that the real SNES intro actually manages to capture much of of an anime-like feel.

Soul Blade on the PS1. I dont think any intro has ever psyched me up for a beat 'em up as much as this, although the paint-splattered SFIV intro is rather gorgeous.

This is really hard to think of a stand out but I'll go with the above.

Unfortunately the rest of the game didn't remotely live up to the opening - IMHO.

An appointment to FEMA. It'll be finalised within the week; I've already discussed the matter with the Senator...

The intros to World of Warcraft and it's two expansions. Blizzard's CGI is up there with Square-Enix's.

I love Deus Ex as much as the next but the intro isnt that exciting. Its 2 blokes in suits talking and hinting at a conspiracy.

Half Life however was revolutionary. You "played" the intro. You get a sense of reality and routine before chaos kicks off. You meet people and get a sense that you have a mundane life prior to the action. Too many games simply start you as the kick ass hero. How many times do you get to be a theoretical physicist and do experiments etc. 8-) You see the hero step up from normality to super star. It is a style that has been heavily copied since which says a lot!
