Quite surprised they've actually gone through with this, but it's funny that FIFA have priced themselves out of so much free money.
Surely EA could've come up with a better name though? EA Sports FC is terrible. Even EA Sports Football would be better, or EA Football.

Let's face it, the knuckle-draggers who constitute the vast majority of FIFA's audience, are going to buy a FIFA game no matter who makes it.

Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue does it?

EA Football would have been best I think.

EA SPORTS Presents: Soccer, it's a funny old game.

EA Sports FC doesn't even really imply that it's a football game, it just makes it sound like a generic multi-sports compilation. Someone actually got paid to come up with that name, just imagine

Do many people have nostalgia for FIFA and EA Sports like they do Sensible Soccer and ISS?

I thought FIFA was a load of gooseberry fool until World Cup 98, peaked with 99, and then had completely gone to gooseberry fool again by 2002.

The problem with the marketing department is they just walk it in.

It will be interesting to see how sales are impacted. Ultimate Team is huge for EA and I think EA will do pretty well in moving that userbase on. There will be some upset kids though!

It is slightly comical to watch two large, money grabbing corporations out-greed each other to the point that probably nobody wins. Who on Earth will pick the license up? I think it's pretty risky with the amount of money being asked.

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.

If Sony or Microsoft had any sense they'd snap up the license themselves and get one of their in-house studios to come up with a platform exclusive. FIFA only being on Xbox or PS5 would be a big pull for the casual gamer.

The only feasible thing FIFA should do, in my opinion, is that whatever new game they stick their flag in, it should consider moving away from being a direct competitor to EA Sports Whatever. Basically, just remake FIFA Street. I might be wrong here but I think that Volta mode in the new FIFA’s is some sort of homage/rip-off but strawberry float that. Make some wild, exciting low barrier to entry game that’s just going to put fun back into the game.

My guess is they probably chose that name because it translates well into a bunch of different languages, even if it is a bit clunky.

Plus EAFC is a decent acronym.

But the acronym is EASFC.

EA Football also wouldn’t have worked due to the American market (and possibly the Irish market too). If they instead called it EA Soccer then that would then annoy the fans in other countries. EA Sports FC, if a bit clunky, is the compromise. I think it will be called EA FC within a year or two once the brand is established.

That's actually a good point, I hadn't considered that.

I suppose they could have named it different depending on region, like how Codemasters used to rebadge TOCA Touring Car and Brian Lara Cricket something else in Australia.

I think FIFA Soccer may have been the name of FIFA in the US for years.

So to summarise, EA no longer have the rights to use the FIFA name but will continue to make the football game previously known as FIFA, while FIFA will sell the branding to some other new game that is FIFA in name only.

As an annual release coinciding with each new football season I think EA should go with the name "Story of Seasons"

It's basically the same thing that happened with Championship Manager back in the day, when Eidos took the name and nothing else, and Sports Interactive took the source ode/game engine and rebranded it as Football Manager. Didn't end too well for Eidos and Football Manager is now a household name.
