No 8-)

What about the whole Zack being Cloud thing from FFVII? You didn't even mention that

Or was it just that for some reason, Cloud had Zack's memories?

I think that's part of the problem that SquareEnix have been dealing with ever since they began sacrifing gameplay for artistry, though.

He just had his memories from when Zack was speaking to Cloud. Cloud lost most of his own memories and stole Zack's life. Cloud :x

Crisis Core is awesome. Good combat system, better story than the sequel, Zack > Cloud.

It was just tap, tap, tap, random fruit machine, use magic and repeat. It was not a good system and the main reason I gave up on it if I'm honest

Blame The Spirits Within. Square lost so much money on it, they immediately had to put X-2 into production, kick starting the conveyor belt of sequels.

I got into Final Fantasy Games with FFVII and loved FFVIII, IX and quite enjoyed the SNES ones when I went back and played them, though I never completed any. Got to say though I got bored a few hours into FFX and never bothered to pick up XII/XIII.

I'm playing through FFVII again at the moment on my PSP and I'm loving it, random battles are more irritating than ever and feel like a really dated concept but the overall game is just as playable and just as much fun as it ever was. I'm enjoying the plot and the complexities of the game more than ever as I have more of an understanding of it now I'm so much older. It remains almost certainly my favourite ever game.

That said there's nothing about the new Final Fantasy's that has drawn me to them, the plots and characters have looked distinctly uninteresting and I wish instead of faffing around making sequels to what seem to be regarded as two of the weakest FF Games (X and XIII) they went back and updated/remade FF7 (I don't necessarily think a full remakes necessary, somebody took the PC Version and improved the Resolution of the Pre-Rendered Backgrounds and made new Character Models and it looks miles better).

I think the whole franchise could do with a bit of a fresh start because its obvious people are starting to lose interest but its such a multi-platform franchise that I think its hard to say its being flogged to death. If it becomes a yearly release like CoD then that to me would be 'flogging it to death'.

Good article.

Pretty much agree with everything said.

Especially the names thing. God damn, they are stupid and so damn confusing. I thought that trailer for Agito was for Versus. The fact that I even thought that rather than just thinking how stupid it all is just shows how desensitised I've become to their madness.

It's more that it's a problem with the japanese RPG industry as a whole. Because people who play those sorts of gamers are (by and large) a fairly niche market who tend to enjoy certain patterns, the developers tend to churn out more of the same kind of ridiculous gooseberry fool time after time.

It's similar (and linked) to the anime industry's decline into Staydead garbage territory where instead of doing anything new, they rehash old series or plotlines over and over.

Unless you're Suzz and his massive PSP import collection you could count every decent RPG released in this country, this gen on one hand. Off the top of my head I can think of Lost Odyssey, Valkyria Chronicles and Tales of Vesperia.

Blue Dragon, Last Remnant, and Resonance of Fate all have their virtues too.

Not without their virtue sure but you'd hardly rant and rave about them in say, the way that people do about Mass Effect.

Precisely. Not that last generation was necessarily better but the RPG genre as a whole in Japan is stuck in a stagnant rut of using the same type of storyline and characters over and over again. But then again, they produce them like that because they know it's precisely what will sell to the tastes of their existing customers.

The battles basically ARE the game. Other than the battles, some shittastic minigames and some ridiculously basic exploration, everything else is just window dressing. Pretty window dressing, I grant, but window dressing nonetheless.

I honestly believe that FF7 could actually have been realised better in traditional media than as a game.

I know they are all set in the same universe but surely it doesn't help that they are all Final Fantasy games. I know it's not solving the problem but maybe they could try calling them something else and people might not feel they are buying the same game 3 times a year.
Even Fifa struggled when it has two editions during world cup year so three would be a stretch even for them.

The problem is not the series, SE has really burned itself out. Most of the real talent that made the games so great has moved on to do their own things. Modern FF games are being developed by hordes of young FF fans and we all know what happens when you start giving fans what they claim they want.

I'm still failing to see how they're burnt out. XIII wasn't a brilliant game, and they've said they're rectifying the problems of XIII in the new games :?

If they're still making new games they're hardly "burnt out", otherwise they wouldn't be making games anymore and they'd be dead.

Y'know, lets wait and see how good these upcoming game turn out to be before we all make pathetic articles whinging about how confusing their names are.

I don't think that's how it works Frank. It's not like books where once a story is finished they stop naturally as the author moves on as this is big business and they can just hire new people who will churn out more games even if they are almost identical. The games may be burnt out but they could still make 50 more anyway if they think they will make a few quid.
