I remember finding the trigger way too hard to time right when I first played this on PS1 so goodness knows what skill will be required to do it at 4x!

Most of my subsequent plays have been on PC and either I've got better at it or the timing window is much more generous because I rarely missed it those times.

That card game was my favourite bit of FFVIII. Then FFIX came out and replaced it with whatever abomination that was.

Now whilst I love me some Triple Triad you need to wash your mouth out here - Tetra Master on FFIX was amazing too! :D

My main use for the card game was it's power in getting access to rare items/magic through refining cards - I think there were some ultimate weapons and things that could only be made with stuff you got from cards?

I wanted to know what is different about this version:

This remaster has taken the character, weapon, and enemy models and rebuilt them from the ground up to be completely 3D, instead of textured to look 3D like the original. As you can see by the comparison pictures a lot of work has gone into updating the character models, and though aren't perfect, they are good enough to play the game without your eyes bleeding. Nostalgia is a huge part of these remasters so it is important that while the game is updated to fit modern technology, it isn't edited to the point of being unrecognizable.

While Square Enix hasn't touched the main gameplay, they have added several ways to make the game a little more enjoyable for those who have already played. The game can now be played up to three times faster than the original game. This makes a lot of sense as some of the animations and all of the cutscenes are time-consuming to watch, and moving around the world can take more time than needed.

They have also added the ability to max out your HP and ATB gauge — your ATB gauge controls what abilities you can use. This will give your playthrough a more cinematic feel as you will always be able to do the best abilities and you'll never die. Only use this if you have played the game already or you will lose a lot of what makes playing the game feel worthwhile.

Lastly, Square Enix will give you the option to turn off some of the timed content in the game. There are certain sections that are a race against the clock, and if you are running the game at three times the speed, these parts just don't work. I've never enjoyed that part of the game so it's great that they have given us a toggle.

Cool, I quite like the look of some of those character model changes. Squall always looked strawberry floated up when played on an emulator or PC at higher resolution because the models were just not up to it!

Glad to hear there is a 3x speed option, I will be using that liberally!

My only small nitpick is that they went with the more modern looks for the characters. The I kinda wish we had their likeness more to the original designs, but I get they only had so much room to work with.

A toggle on timed sections is great news. I've always thought in-game timers should be optional.

Isn't this the type of thing PS5 might be capable of as standard? So you put in a PS1 or 2 disc, or purchase it off the Store, and it automatically jazzes it up using techno-bollocks?

Not to this extent - this is actually swapping out the character models for better ones, changing the data in the game itself. That would be very hard to do by just inserting the disc into the PS5. Not necessarily impossible, but I can't see it myself.

Stuff like running at higher resolution and framerate, smoothing out textures and adding anti-aliasing - all that is possible and will help it look nicer.

EDIT: no reason they couldn't do it for a version released on the store though. But that probably wouldn't be running on emulation if it were the case.

Actually quite impressive - yes it has to be new character models because sharpening those PS1 images would lead to a smooth blurry image.

This isn't a remake though as people have pointed out, and the footage on display there looked ropey as all strawberry float. That framerate :dread:

Still. Here's hoping

I've been on and off playing FFIX on PC. O have the ESRGAN mod thing and it looks very nice, bit the frame rate in battles has to be 12, awful.

I wonder if they'll do anything with the Chocobo World mini game that you could only get on the PocketStation back in the day?

Looks like they've ripped the models straight out of Dissidia or something, with no attention paid to the art design of the original. Not a fan as I liked the realism of the original designs, one of the unique things about VIII.
